Preamble

Conventional rotating machines are very commonly used in industrial drive systems. It
can be energized directly by conventional AC and DC power supplies. These rotating machines
works based on the electromechanical energy conversion principles. Usage of machines and
gadgets in manufacturing industries, traction applications which improves the production,
transportation and spurred industrial research.
Direct Current (DC) machines are the most versatile energy conversion devices.
Generally, for the generation, transmission and utilization of electrical energy AC systems are
preferred as compared to the DC systems. Asynchronous and synchronous AC machines
consists of distributed armature winding and concentrated DC field winding. The armature
winding delivers or exports AC power when its working as generator and it absorbs or imports
AC power as a motor.

Part -A (10 MARKS)

Debate on the topic AC Machines are Preferred over DC Machines for Escalator Applications
Your debate should address the following:
A1.1 Introduction to AC and DC machines
A1.2 Critically review the characteristics of AC and DC Machines
A1.3 The need of high starting torque for escalator applications
A1.4 Preferred type of machine for escalator applications
A1.5 Justify your stance and conclusion

Part B (40 marks)
B.1 Transformer manufacturer is constructing a distribution transformer core shown in figure1
made up of caste steel iron having 200 turns on primary of its first limb. The overall area of
cross section is 2*10-2 m2, length of aed is 0.35m, length of bc is 0.25m, length of cd is
0.25m. Assume that first limb is carrying flux 1, second limb carrying flux 2 and third limb
has flux 3.

Figure 1. Transformer Core

During manufacturing of transformer, accidently an air gap of 0.25mm was created at

midpoint of third limb with a magnetic flux mWb.
B1.1 Draw equivalent magnetic circuit
B1.2 Arrive at its equivalent electrical circuit
B1.3 Calculate the primary current required to establish flux in the air gap
(neglect fringing effect)
B1.4 Compute the voltage at the ad terminals using Thevenins theorem

B.2 Consider a 4-pole lap connected DC machine that converts mechanical energy into
electrical energy and is used for constant voltage applications. The DC machine has an
armature resistance of 10 and a field resistance of 300 . The armature has 120 conductors
in the slots and runs at 1000 rpm. Allow 1V per brush for contact drops and neglect friction.
Machine is required to supply the following loads:

(i) 3 kW Geyser at 250 V

(ii) 2 kW Lighting load also at 250 V
(iii) 5 kW Submersible pump at 250 V and
(iv) 2.5 kW electric oven at 250 V

4
Address the following:
B2.1 Identify whether the loads should be connected in parallel or series
and justify your choice.
B2.2 Calculate magnetic flux per pole
B2.3 Calculate armature current per parallel path
B2.4 Draw the equivalent circuit diagram for the given loads.

B.3 The demand for the lighting of a small village is 50 A at 200 V. This is supplied from a
dynamo of a distance station. The generated voltage being 220 V. Compute
B3.1 Resistance of the leads from the dynamo to the village
B3.2 The number of Board Of Trade (BOT) units of energy (kWh) consumed in
10 hours in the village
B3.3 The number of BOT units of energy (kWh) wasted in the leads in the same
time
B3.4 Draw the equivalent circuit of the power supply

B.4 The following results are obtained from the O.C and S.C test on X kVA, 125/250 V, 50 Hz
single phase transformer
O.C. Test 125 V 0.6 A 50 W On L.V side
S.C Test 15 V 40 A 177.77 W On H.V side

Determine:
B 4.1 Copper loss on half load condition
B 4.2 Full load and half load efficiency at 0.8 p.f. leading
B 4.3 Regulation at full load and half load at 0.8 p.f. lagging
Also comment on efficiency and regulation at full load and half load conditions
Consider the value of X in between 2 to 10
