Standard 2 Culture as it Affects Student Learning

Artifact 2 Analysis

The relationship that my students have with literacy is directly related to their cultural and

personal experiences. I have learned that, by developing an understanding of the literacies that

my students are bringing to the classroom, I can contextualize learning to make language and

literacy development more engaging for them.

The attached artifact is a literacy survey that my students take at the beginning of each

term. This survey not only provides me with information about how my students feel about

reading and literacy, but we also use it to discuss that literacy extends beyond just reading

books.

Often times, students enter the classroom thinking that they dont like reading or that

they are just not good readers. By discussing the survey, students begin to understand that they

are already using literacy in their daily lives through social media usage, music, and television.

Because my students are adults, I also like to generate data on how much time they spend

reading to their own children. This also leads to further conversations of how they can increase

their own reading skills, as well as that of their children by reading to them.
