b Implementing and Managing Standards-Based ESL and Content Instruction


Artifact 1

Effective implementation of standards-based ESL and content instruction involves being

able to meaningfully assess work. Additionally, by providing students with texts and activities

that interest them I can increase students interest and ability to comprehend a text.

The attached artifact is an example of assessment of student writing. This particular

student is a Syrian refugee who aspires to be a nurse. In this activity, she independently read an

article about a Syrian woman who had become a doctor in the United States. Knowing that I

wanted to use this assignment as an opportunity to assess her writing, I chose an article that I

believed she would be most interested in. Therefore, I was able to assess not just her ability to

write sentences, but I was able to assess the word, sentence, and discourse level of her

responses.

Before completing my ENL coursework, I would not have considered student interest in

the topic to impact the depth of their response. Of course, I knew that the student would be

more likely to do the assignment if she was interested, but I was unaware that they would

generate written responses that reflected stronger discourse level language if it was a topic that

they were personally invested in.
