Lesson Element 1. Common Core Learning Standard(s) Addressed: 1.2.1 Identify that healthy behaviors impact personal health. 2. Learning Target(s): Students will learn how valuable their health is and will choose what foods are healthy, as well as how to practice good hygiene, and ways to be physically active. 3. Relevance/Rationale: The outcomes of this lesson are important so students can take care of themselves. This material will also aide them in Health classes in upper grades. 4. Formative Assessment Criteria for Success: Students and I will know if they successfully met the outcomes by students taking a test about health on Khan Academy. During the test, questions will appear such as: How many parts are there to a healthy diet What is a way to be physically active? When should you brush your teeth? If the students get a majority of the questions correct 14(+) on a test out of 20 points, they succeeded in the lesson. 5. Activities/Tasks: Students will engage in activities such as Paint on Word to draw what comes to their mind when they hear the word health. Ex) Heart, food, sports, washing hands. They will also do physical activities. Ex) jumping jacks, throwing a ball outside, racing. Another activity students will do, is acting scenarios out like brushing their teeth, flossing, and washing their hands. Students will also get to explain the material they are learning by hearing the teacher explain a word and conversing with another student about the word. Ex) Toothbrush: A small brush with a large handle, used for cleaning teeth. Student A to Student B: I Have a purple toothbrush! Student B to Student A: My toothbrush plays a song! Lastly students will use Zunal an online game that involves a young boy who is sick and the students will write a letter to him explaining how he could get better. Ex) You should drink lots of water. Wash your hands. Sneeze in your elbow. All of these activities will allow students to grasp the material and I can see who is comprehending what is being taught. 6. Resources/Materials: Electronic Whiteboard, YouTube, tablets, computers, toothbrush, floss, vegetables, soap, hand sanitizer, paper, pencils, My Amazing Body by Pat Thomas (book) 7. Access for All: By bringing in items to see and experience, students of different diversity will have a better understanding. If I show pictures on a video, book, or they get to physically see or do what I am teaching they will have a clearer idea of what is being presented. 8. Modifications/Accommodations: I will have tablets with health apps such as PBS kids for students to use and to type if they verbal disabilities or are not an auditory learner, and I will have throwing as a physical activity I they are incapable of using their legs.
