Activity/Experience Name _____Cooking - Mixing & Baking Cupcakes __________

INTENTIONS FOR LEARNING

Goal(s): Describe the general or long-term developmental focus of this experience.
List the California Preschool Learning Foundation(s) or California Infant/Toddler Learning
and Development Foundation(s) here:

This experience is planned to support childrens understanding of measurable properties such as

size, length, weight, and capacity (volume), and how to quantify those properties.

Objectives: What specific and observable concepts or skills will the child learn, explore, or
discover? The child will be able to List the Preschool DRDP Measure(s) or Infant/Toddler
DRDP measure(s) here:

TCWBAT show understanding of some measurable properties (e.g., size, length, weight capacity)
or uses words (e.g., big, heavy) to describe some measurable properties.
COG 5: Measurement, Building Earlier

TCWBAT Explore the properties of objects (e.g., size, length, weight capacity) through either the
use of measurement tools with standard unites (e.g., ruler, scale) or use of nonstandard units
(e.g., footsteps, blocks).
COG 5: Measurement, Integrating Earlier

EXPERIENCE PLAN
Activity Description:

The children will help me to count, measure, pour and mix a cupcake mix. They take turns for the
duration of the activity so everyone can take part. They also help to pour the batter into the
cupcake liners/pan and we talk about what will happen to them when we put them in the oven.

Invitational Set-up: How will the experience be presented to invite participation or provoke
interest? (Provide a photograph of the set-up).

Cupcakes always provoke childrens interest I tell the children that we will also be decorating
the cupcakes the next time I come in, so they will be excited to take part.
Specific vocabulary, teaching strategies, and open-ended questions you will keep in mind
(Using your textbook and/or Curriculum Frameworks, list specific ways you will promote
problem-solving and critical thinking beyond a simple recall of facts):

Specific vocabulary to offer: measure, mix, quantity, ingredients, share, gentle

Possible questions: Who bakes at home with mom or dad or grandma? What are your favorite
cake flavors? Has anyone made a measurement before?

Possible teaching strategies: Make sure that I am in complete control over the situation. Assign
one job at a time and enforce sharing and taking turns.

How is this experience personalized (i.e. modified) to meet the varying developmental and
individual needs of the children in your class? (e.g., older children, younger children,
specific needs or interests?)

Each child will get to contribute to the process. If they are nervous or have never assisted before,
help will be given and other children will be encouraged to provide an example to help their friend
out.

Specific materials needed that are not already accessible to children:

Everything is accessible in the classroom for this activity.

REFLECTION/EVALUATION

What did you do well?

Gave all of the children a chance to take part in making the cupcakes. They taught me the mixie-
mixie song to sing with them! I was able to hold their attention and they did a great job listening
to me in return.

How did the children respond to the experience presented? (Describe your observations
of childrens words and actions) What worked? What was difficult? Were there any
surprises?

They responded well because they are used to doing cooking and baking activities with
Teacher Hope. They know what is appropriate and not appropriate behavior during this
time.

One thing that worked well was establishing turns and explaining my actions as I was
doing them so the children could follow along.

Something difficult was keeping the children in their seats instead of leaning over the
table and sticking their faces into the mixing bowl.

I was surprised so many children wanted to be involved. They all did!

What additions or changes would you make if you were to do this activity again? What did
the children teach you (e.g. about curriculum, teaching, or children)?

If I did this activity again, I would do smaller groups at a time, if possible.

The children taught me a new song they sing when they mix during cooking so that they all get
the same amount of time to participate.
