ASSIGNMENT - 1 QUESTIONS III - B.TECH IT SEM: IV

1. Draw the TCP/IP network architectural model and explain the features of
various layers. Also list the important protocols at each layer and describe
its purpose. Briefly describe the difference between the OSI and TCP/IP
architectural model.

2. i. Suppose that a digitized TV picture is to be transmitted from a source

that uses a matrix of 480 x 500 picture elements (pixels), where each
pixel can take on one of 32 intensity values. Assume that 30 pictures are
sent per second. (This digital source is roughly equivalent to broadcast TV
standards that have been adopted.) Find the source rate R (bps).
ii. Assume that the TV picture is to be transmitted over a channel with
4.5-MHz bandwidth and a 35-dB signal-to-noise ratio. Find the capacity of
the channel (bps).
iii. Discuss how the parameters given in part (i) could be modified to allow
transmission of color TV signals without increasing the required value for
R.

3. What is the total delay (latency) for a frame of size 5 million bits that is
being sent on a link with 10 routers each having a queuing time of 2 Ils
and a processing time of 1 Ils. The length of the link is 2000 Km. The
speed of light inside the link is 2 x 108 mls. The link has a bandwidth of 5
Mbps. Which component of the total delay is dominant? Which one is
negligible?

4. Assuming that a PSTN has a bandwidth of 3000 Hz and a typical S/N

power ratio of 30db, determine the maximum theoretical (data) rate that
can be achieved.
5. What is the bit rate for each of the following signals?
a. A signal in which 1 bit lasts 0.001 s
b. A signal in which 1 bit lasts 2 ms
c. A signal in which 10 bits last 20 J-ls

6. Given the frequencies listed below, calculate the corresponding periods.

a. 24Hz
b. 8 MHz
c. 140 KHz

7. A device is sending out data at the rate of 1000 bps.

a. How long does it take to send out 10 bits?
b. How long does it take to send out a single character (8 bits)?
c. How long does it take to send a file of 100,000 characters?

8. a. A channel has S / N of 20 dB and bandwidth of 3100 Hz. What is the

maximum bit rate it can transmit?
b. What is the number of signaling levels required for achieving the
maximum bit rate?
c. If each level is assigned a binary code of fixed length, calculate the
maximum achievable bit rate.
