THE LEGEND OF SLEEPY HOLLOW

SUMMARY

CHAPTER ONE SLEEPY HOLLOW

SLEEPY HOLLOW is a tranquil valley in America. Its near the Hudson River in New York State.
People from Sleepy Hollow are descendants of emigrants from Holland, they are farmers.

They are supersticious and think that there are ghosts in the valley, they often tell stories
about ghosts and witches.

CHAPTER TWO THE TALL TEACHER

The school in Sleepy Hollow is old, ugly and small. It is made of logs and there are holes in
some of the windows. Books cover the holes. The teacher is tall and thin, with a small and flat
head, enormous ears and big feet. His name is Ichabod Crane. He is ugly but girls like him
because he tells interesting stories. He loves dancing and he gives music lessons after school
to get more money.

In winter Ichabod likes sitting in front of the fire with the women, eat fruit and tell scary
stories.

One day when he comes back home, he is frightened because it is very dark and he thinks
there are ghosts.

They say that many stories about ghosts in Sleepy Hollow comes with the wind. Students are
scared but they want Ichabod to tell them the story of a ghost who hadnt got a head. He
always rode a black horse.

CHAPTER THREE GHOST STORY

In 1775 a soldier died because a cannon hit his head when he was riding a big, black horse.
The dead soldier is the Headless Horseman, nowadays when it is stormy the ghost of Headless
Horseman rides his horse to look for his head. The Headless Horsemans favourite place is
near the church, where he is buried, there is an old bridge with an enormous tree.

Mayor Brouwer says he isnt afraid of ghosts stories, but one night when he is riding his horse
in the fields,a lighting hit a tree and Mayor Brouwer is afraid, the Headless Horseman is riding
after him, M. Brouwer asks for help but nobody hears him. Headless Horseman attacks him
and pulls him down, then he throws him to the river. M. Brouwer dies because he hits his head
against a rock. During storms he always shouts for help.

CHAPTER 4 KATRINA

Katrina Van Tassel is eighteen year old, she is beautiful , popular and rich. She has a lot of
gold rings on her fingers. Her father has got a big farm with a lot of animals. Ichabod loves her
food and her house. He gives her lessons at her house. Ichabod is in love with her , but he has
got a rival, Brom Bones.

CHAPTER FIVE BROM BONES

Brom Bones is big and strong, he has a great sense of humour. He loves having a good time
with his four good friends. He is an excellent rider. He always takes Katrina for a ride on his
horse, Daredevil. Ichabod doesnt like Brom Brom because he wants to marry Katrina. But.
Brom has a plan to get Katrina.
CHAPTER SIX THE PLAN

Brom likes to play tricks on people. One day Brom and his friends put some leaves into the
school chimney. When Ichabod makes the fire smoke fills the room. He thinks that there are
witches in the school.

Brom and his friends go to the school another day to make a terrible mess. They put
everything on the floor. Ichabod thinks that there are witches again. When Ichabod is giving
Katrina singing lessons, Brom and his friends are outside with a dog, Brom says that the dog
can sing so that everybody laughs. After the lesson Brom takes Katrina home on his house.

CHAPTER 7 THE INVITATION

Baltus Van Tassel, Katrinas father, invites Ichabod to a party at his house. Ichabod is very
pleased because Mrs Vab Tassel prepares delicious food and he can dance with Katrina.
Ichabod puts on his good clothes and he prepares for the party. He aks a farmer to lend him
his horse to impress Katrina. The horse only has one eye and is old but he knows the roads
very well. The horses name is Gunpowder and the farmer also gives him his new saddle.

CHAPTER 8 THE PARTY

Ichabod goes to the party. When he got there everybody is listening to Broms stories, and
they applauded when Brom stood on his horse. Ichabod is angry because Katrina doesnt see
him.

Ichabod loves food so he gets into the house to eat, meat, cakes, apple, tarts and pumpkim
tarts.

When they start to dance, he dances with Katrina and he is very happy. Brom comes into the
room, he isnt happy because Katrina is dancing with Ichabod. When the music stops
everybody goes outside tell or listen ghosts stories.

CHAPTER 9 THE BRIDGE

Brom Bones tells another story about the Headless Horseman. He was in a race with him,
but when they came to the bridge, the Headless Horseman disappears and he can only see
fire on the bridge.

Before Ichabod comes back home he talks to Katrina. Katrina tells him that she doesnt want
to marry him, Ichabod is angry. Ichabod is frightened because it is dark and windy, and he
hears a lot of scary noises.

When they got to the bridge, Ichabod is very frightened and Gunpowder doesnt want to cross
the bridge. Suddenly Ichabod sees an enormous black figure. He sings because he is very
nervous. The black figure is following them, he thinks it is the Headless Horseman.
Gunpowder runs very quickly and Ichabos saddle falls to the ground. He looks behind and he
sees that he has his head on his hand, the Headless Horseman throws his head to Ichabod, it
hits his head and Ichabod falls to the ground, in front of Gunpowder.

Ichabod doesnt move. He is lying under some trees. His hat is hear him and everything is
dark and silent.

The farmer is looking for Ichabod because he wants his saddle, but nobody knows nothing
about him.

CHAPTER 10 THE NEXT MORNING

The men in the village go to the forest to look for Ichabod and they find the farmers saddle.
They find Ichabods hat.

Everybody talks about Ichabods disappearance, they say that it is a mystery that the
Headless Horseman got him.

People of Sleepy Hollow are sad and frightened, but they are excited too because they have
another story about the Headless Horseman.

Ichabod never comes to the village again but people say that his ghost is in the school. A new
teacher comes and they build a new school in a different place.

A villager who goes to New York, sees Ichabod and he says that he is a famous lawyer there.

Brom Bones always laughs when people talk about Ichabod and the pieces of pumpkin which
were on the ground near Ichabods hat. Nobody knows why.
