I began my third-time college career taking three classes; Foundations of Mathematical
Reason, First Year Seminar, and Introduction to College Writing. Oddly enough, this was not my introduction to college writing. I have taken this course twice before, so this class wasnt entirely new for me, but more of a refresher. This class reminded me how to properly cite sources, different styles of pre-writing, grammar rules that I have completely forgotten about, and different styles of writing. We have focused on many different styles of writing in this course, my personal favorite being comparison and contrast. I especially enjoyed writing the essay for this section because it encouraged me to focus on my accomplishments as a student and how far Ive come as an individual. In the essay Im Sorry, What Time Does Class Start, I wrote, Changing my attitude, priorities, and what Im focused on affected my life for the better. This can be applied to many aspects, school being the number one. As I previously said, this class was more of a refresher course for me. This course was great because it reminded me how important pre-writing can be, especially if properly laid out. Pre-writing sets the pace for your whole piece of writing. When it is easily laid out, writing the essay is the easy part. Also, this course was helpful when determining different styles of writing. In class, we thoroughly discussed reader response and essay styles. We diagnosed each reader response, breaking down the main points of each. We analyzed and asked ourselves who, what, where, when, and why. This was a very important part of the course, if we have not gone over this in class in such detail, it would have been a lot harder to execute. I really enjoyed the beginning of this course because it was mostly about personal experience. The hard part was the second part of class, focusing more on stone cold facts. This class showed me that I am a strong writer, as long as I am focusing my attention in the right direct ion. In conclusion, this class was perfect for the beginning of my college career at Montgomery College. I will be using everything I have learned this semester in every one of my classes during my college career. This class gave me the confidence and structure I need to further improve my ability as a student and writer. I plan to use the constructive criticism I received on my essays to my advantage. I will no longer make my essays all about me (with the exception of this one!) I will focus more on facts. I do, however, plan to use my strong writing to create a blog where I can use my personal writing. My blog will assist in building my career as an Interior Designer. The pre-writing and different styles of writing will come into play when launching this. I will diagnose my blog posts to properly accomplish the main idea I am aiming for before posting them. In Shooting Dad by Sarah Vowell she wrote, I will light the fuse. But I will not cover my ears. This is how I feel about my college career and future. English 101 has provided me with proof that I am able to succeed, I just need to be a little hard on myself and take it one paragraph at a time. Works Cited. Lynch, Ashley.
