Maker of Disciplemakers
The most influential mentor in my life taught a valuable lesson when it comes to mission
statements. He consistently said, What we are about, never changes, but how we go about
doing it, will always change. I believe my mission statement is simple, and I have held onto it
entails me fulfilling the work of a pastor by saving the lost through discipleship focused
evangelism, discipling young believers, and equipping them for their call.
First, becoming a maker of disciple makers starts well before conversion, and I believe
discipleship is the best way to evangelize. When we think of evangelism, often the thoughts go
to door to door evangelism or street evangelism. I think these have their place and benefit, but
with the culture we live in, we must also be engaged in a person's life. By getting to know them
and their heart, passion, beliefs, more naturally occurring opportunities to share Christ will
happen. This idea was even practiced by D.L. Moody in his early years. In a fantastic
autobiography, A Life: D.L. Moody, by Kevin Belmonte, it was mentioned that in his early years
of ministry, Moody knew the teens in the rough slums of Chicago weren't going to step foot in
the church, so instead he went to them. He talked in very simple ways with them, dedicating
hours to knowing the boys he ministered to and bringing them to his school. It was through
dedicated mentorship and education that these young men were won to Christ. I love that this
was the heart of DL Moody, and how he started his ministry work. I think too often though, we as
a church become inward focused and want the unchurched to come to a service. I think the far
better result is us going out to them. I have seen this with teens I am working with currently. By
picking them up, working out with them, sharing meals with them, I am seeing the fruit of those
The second way to fulfill this mission is the continuous follow up and mentorship in a
person's life, through discipleship. This may be one of the most exciting things I have ever
experienced. Seeing someone come to the Lord and then watching the seed of the gospel take
root, and for the life to be changed around. This takes hard work. It requires continuously being
involved in someone's life, helping them work out their own salvation, (The Bible, Philippians
2:12). The depth of investment and level of discipleship changes for each person of course.
Some have required deep levels of investment and have become spiritual sons in the faith.
Others were for a brief season, and so because of the different levels, I am able to fulfill this
goal no matter where I am. This is a hefty task, as the disciple will come to the discipler for
many things, from theological questions to practical living, and it is my task to pass things I have
learned onto them. This is part of what drives me to finish my degree, so that I can be well
equipped to disciple and lead others towards Christ. I must always be learning, and never
ceasing to educate myself. There are habits of studying and preparation that I am gaining now
The final stage of the mission statement is to help each believer in finding their vocation
and calling and to be well equipped for it. This is the end task of 2 Timothy 2:2, And the things
you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses, entrust to reliable men who will then
be qualified to teach others. This verse means passing on what I have learned, and equipping
others to then pass it on to others using their gifts and abilities. This task requires leadership,
and for me to continue to speak into people's lives, but also to see where the needs are, and
how others can meet them. I understood that in order for me to be a maker of disciplemakers, I
need to be a leader, a visionary, and someone who can build trust to speak into someone else's
life. It was comforting to know that after the questionnaire, people see me as a leader and
someone who helps others to see potential in their lives. But that questionnaire also revealed
that I struggle with when to speak into someone's life and that I need to be tactful when
approaching someone. It is important for me to realize that I don't equip the saints and disciples
with the gift and calling, but that they already have the gift and calling from God. My job is to
guide these younger disciples to these believers to be further equipped. There are people that I
disciple who are going to be gifted in ways that I am not and I need to help direct them to places
Discipleship is something many talk about, but few make it the mission. Because
someone invested in me through discipleship, I now want to invest in others the same way. My
mission is to become a maker of disciple makers by being a pastor who focuses on saving the
lost through discipleship focused evangelism, discipling young believers, and equipping the
