Course Title : Ship Construction & marine engineering

Course Code : BS121
Program on which the course : Bachelor Diploma Master Pre- PhD
is given
Academic year :
Specialization (units of study ) : Theoretical (62hrs ) Simulator (0hrs)Practical (0hrs)
Credit (3H)
Pre-Requisites : None
Overall Course Objectives
On completion of this course, students should be knowledgeable to the principle structure of a ship
& the proper names of the various parts. The course provide students with the ability of intelligent
observation during the ordinary course of their work & could make adequate reports describing the
location & nature of faults or minor damage discovered.

On the other hand, the course provides students with the descriptions of auxiliary machinery,
introduces and classifies the following; heat engine, marine power plants, boilers, marine diesel
engines, pumps, steering gears, bilge oil separators and refrigeration plants,to meet the mandatory
requirements for knowledge, understanding and proficiency in Table A-II/1 of STCW 78, as
amended, for the function of Controlling the Operation of the Ship and Care for Persons on Board
at the Operational Level based on IMO model course 7.03.

Intended Learning Outcomes

Knowledge and Understanding
At the end of the course, students should be able to:
Define the Ships dimensions & form
Recognize the stresses affecting ships structure.
Identify ships main parts, and Hull structure elements
Recognize the Load lines & draught marks
Apply the ships Water tightness Integrity
Identify the main types of pumps
Identify auxiliary machinery and the steering gear system
Understand the power transmission system
Understand the theory of marine diesel engines
Identify the types of boilers and their fittings.
Understand the refrigeration process and its operation cycle.
Intellectual Skills
The course provide students with skills concerned with names of the various ships parts,
definitions of the important terms and measurements and requirements of international regulations
which enable students to write reports in case of accidents and/or damage control. Moreover, the
duties of the officer of the watch at shipyard, also eliminates problems associated with critical
safety situations and avoid serious stresses through the loading and discharging cargo.
Furthermore, marine engineering provide student with the essential skills suitable for deck
officers that imperative in the safety process on board ship, utilizing of ship auxiliary machinery,
and avoiding pollution when ballasting and deballasting operation.
Professional and Practical skills
At the end of the course, students should be able to:
Realize the details of the following elements to lead the damage control team:
o Cross sections and profiles of various type of ships
o Bow and stern elements
o Members of the ships hull structures
o Double bottom, keels, and watertight bulkheads
o Bilge piping arrangement
o Rudders
Avoid hogging or sagging due to bad distribution of cargos.
Recognize the ship auxiliary machinery and the steering gear system
Recognize the boilers and various types of pumps
Recognize oily water separator
General and Transferable skills
At the end of the course, students should be able to:
Classify the ships main parts for repairing and dry-docking.
Make use of the engineering knowledge that required enriching deck officers
skills.
