Preface.
The importance of Arabian medicine in the history of the
development of the healing Art is generally admitted. The value
of the original contributions of the Arabic Medical writers to
certain branches of the science of Medicine like Pharmacology and
Opthalmology has been proved and acknowledged. The general
problem of the originality of the Arabic writers on the subject,
however, is yet to be solved. For a right solution of this problem a
good deal of the Arabic medical literature, extant only in manu
script form, has to be explored, important works have to be
edited and published, and their value and originality have to be
determined.
The edition of the present work, the Firdausu'l-Hikmat of
'AH b. Rabban-al-Tabari the oldest extant Arabic medical com
pendium written in 850 A. D. is an effort in this direction.
The importance of this book was first realised by that eminent
Orientalist, the late Prof. E. O. Browne, while he was preparing
his Fitzpatrick lectures on Arabian Medicine. His inborn interest
in Oriental learning was so much excited by the importance of
this book that he got a complete photographic copy off the
British Museum manuscript (Arundel Or. 41), consisting of 276
folios, and went through it carefully. He gave a short account
of the sources and contents of the book in his 2nd lecture on
Arabian Medicine and expressed his intention to edit it with an
English translation. As a matter of fact he had translated about
twenty pages of it. Although he had to defer this work on account
of his numerous duties and varied literary activities, his interest
in it never subsided, and he never laid this book aside altogether.
In 1922 when I went to Cambridge as a Government of
Bihar and Orissa research scholar and began to work on "the
Development of Arabic Medical literature", under his supervision
he suggested to me that I would do great service to the Medical
literature of the Arabs if I edited the Firdausu'l-Hikmat. After
some hesitation I took up this additional arduolus and responsible 1
work, collated the British Museum manuscript with the Berlin
and Gotha manuscripts, and established a complete critical texii
of the book excepting the last few pages which were missing in
all these manuscripts, and were supplied later on from another
manuscript in India. While I was working on the text, the
E. J. W. Gibb Memorial Trust consented to pay one hundred
pounds towards its publication if the Kaviani press of Berlin
took it up. The Kavjani accepted the offer of the Trust and
started to print the book in 1924. In 1928 they sent a complete
printed copy of it to me in India in order that I might prepare
an Introduction, which is written in Arabic, the text being in
that language.
The present text is based on the three manuscripts of the
Firdausu'l-Hikmat existing in European libraries. After page 550,
full use has also been made of the manuscript in the possession
of Hakim Khawaja Kamaluddin of Lucknow. Thus all the lacunae
and mistakes in any of these manuscripts have been supplied and
corrected, and a complete critical text has been established.
All parts of the text taken from any single manuscript and
not found in the others have been put within particular signs,
and the deficiency of the other manuscripts in this respect has
been pointed out in the foot-notes, so that readers may form an
idea of the different manuscripts. Where the manuscripts differ,
the editor, using his judgement, has adopted the text that appeared
to him most appropriate, and has placed it within the signs
devoting that particular manuscript. The variant text has been
put in the foot-note within the signs, which indicate the manu
script from which it is taken, in order that the reader may be
free to form his own judgement. In certain instances where such
texts were too long for a foot-note, they have been printed in
Appendix (I), and a foot-note has been added to inform the reader.,

In order to bring out fully the reliability of the author and
the importance of the book an effort has been made to* identify
a large number of the quotations in it with their originals. In
many cases the Arabic versions of the works quoted in the
Firdausu'l-Hikmat were not available for me. This made the
identification in such cases impossible. A large number of such
quotations, however, have been identified with their Greek orif-
ginals with the help of Dr. Th. Withington a well-known
authority on the history of medicine to whom/ I had supplied
the English translations of the quotations. The references to
these quotations and their original sources have been put to
gether in Appendix (2), in the hope that they may be of some
help to such scholars and workers in this field as are interested in
determining the faithfulness of the Arabic translations of the
Greek works.
I am fully conscious of the defects in the execution of this
work. I regret them much, especially the mistakes in the printing
of the text. But in the circumstances under which the book was
printed they were unavoidable. All the gross mistakes, however,)
have been corrected in the List of Errata. Such minor mistakes
as I thought could be easily detected by readers are not included
therein, as they would have made the list too long.

specially to Mr. E. W. Fawcus, the Director of Public Instruc
tion and Sir Muhammad Fakhruddfn, the Minister of Education
who offered me an opportunity for advanced study olf Arabic

He infused in me the spirit of research, guided me through its
difficult paths, helped me in my difficulties, sympathised with
me in my troubles and encouraged me even while lying sick on
his death-bed. It was at his suggestion and persuasion that I
took up this work. It was through his constant generous help
that it came to a successful end, and it is through his efforts
that it sees the light.
In acknowledgement of the unfailing sympathy and ungrudging

Appendix 2.
In this Appendix are given the references to the quotations
in the Firdausu'l-Hikmat, and to their original texts, Greek, Arabic
or Indian, so far as they could be identified. The references to
the Greek texts are traced by my esteemed and learned friend
Dr. Th. Withington a well-known authority on the history of
Medicine. The references to the Arabic versions of the Greek
texts and to English version of the Sanskrit texts are found out
by myself. The few references to the original Sanskrit authorities
found in the foot-notes of the present text are identified by my
given Pandit Salik Ram Shaski a successful Praktitioner of the
Indian System of Medicine at Lucknow.
