One of my all-time favourite rooms was the minus-
cule guest room in the 14-foot-wide Victorian
rowhouse I now nostalgically call my single girl
pad. It was approximately 8 feet by 11 feet and
had one tiny awkward window. While decorating
the master bedroom was relatively simple I kept
it light, bright and minimal the cramped guest
room posed a real challenge. I decided to follow
the advice I normally give for decorating powder
rooms: Use bold colours, embrace eclecticism and
remember that anything goes! Despite being
slightly colour shy, I chose Farrow & Balls Cook-
ing Apple Green paint, a bright shade Id been
longing to try, to energize the space. I hung my
collection of vintage mirrors to offset the awk-
ward window and reect what little natural light
the spot had, making the space seem larger. But
none of my magic tricks could actually physically
expand the room, and picking a bed presented
the biggest problem. I didnt want my guest room

to be all bed. A custom Gustavian-style daybed
by Julia West Design that could transform into a
double bed did the trick, giving guests space to
move around when getting ready in the morning,
and to stretch out for a comfy sleep at night. It
was the perfect solution. The rooms crowning
glory was by far a beautiful antique chandelier
Id purchased years prior. It was unexpected in
the petite space and lent a sense of importance
despite the areas diminutive size.
When I sold the house, the guest room was
the hardest to leave behind. I got teary as I took
down all the mirrors and, although every light x-
ture had been sold with the home, I insisted that
the chandelier come with me. Its now packed
away in a box in the garage, alongside my vin-
tage mirrors. I still havent found a spot for them,
but I know theyre perfect for any small space.
Perhaps when my stepdaughters have their own
single girl pads my sentimental favourites will
nd a home again.

1. Pare to Perfection
Less is more is a familiar
small space refrain and for
good reason. Our home &
style director Ann Marie
Favot loves the Eero Saa-
rinen dining table, she says,
because its a pedestal
fewer legs, less chaos. Its
airy looking. The back-to-
basics form of the chairs
also exemplies uncluttered
design, while an oversized
mirror makes maximum
impact. The mirror dened
the space, creating a visual
separation from the living
area, and helped the room
look bigger by reecting all
the white, she says, which
was key in the windowless
zone. Rounding out the fur-
nishings, a small console
that was less hefty than
a cabinet created a chic
spot for display.
2. Create Comfort
Without Crowding
In a narrow house with small
rooms, its essential to have
enough space to navigate
through, but to also achieve
a cozy vibe. The dining

room bench [against the
stair wall] was little, so you
could walk by, but it was so
useful, says Ann Marie. It
could be pulled into the liv-
ing and dining areas for
guest seating and was close
to the front door for sitting
on while putting on shoes.
A vintage washstand with a
mirror at the bottom of the
stairs by the door ofered a
tabletop for keys and draw-
ers for mitts. Ann Marie
painted the stairs white to
help make them fade into
the background. And they
were super easy to wipe
clean, she says.
Our amazing home & style director Ann Marie Favot is, more than most people, surrounded by colour, pattern and a myr-
iad of objects every workday. What she needed at home was the opposite a place to exhale. All white was the serenity-now solution
she used to visually expand her former house, a narrow 974-square-foot Toronto home. It was just soahhhhh, she says. There
wasnt any visual noise, and the clean palette was so soothing. Ann Maries advice on how to make an all-white abode tranquil
(not sterile) will have small space dwellers everywhere echoing her deep sigh of contentment.

3. Expand the Tonal Range
Even though white visually
enlarges a space, executed
improperly this single hue
can be boring or of-putting.
Ann Maries secret to creat-
ing a welcoming and calm-
but-not-cold space is three-
fold: Add texture, keep it
uncluttered and employ a
variety of shades. I used a
bunch of diferent intensities
and undertones, she says.
The custom chairs are a
bright white linen, while the
sofas a natural ax linen,
and velvet cushions in pale
grey added a cooler tone
and diferent texture. Uphol-
stery is trim and tailored.
Crucially, the room wasnt
overstufed with furniture or
objects, which achieves the
light and bright feeling Ann
Marie loves.
You dont want too many objects in a small space arrangement.

slice of a former cardboard box factory. But the design borrows from
historic architecture across Europe particularly England, the birth-
place of homeowner and designer Becca Galbraith. Situated in pictur-
esque DUMBO (short for Down Under Manhattan Bridge Overpass),
the apartment Becca shares with husband Ryan Casey is informed
by diverse places and eras, lending it a timeworn luxury that belies

Sometimes more can be
just too much. Such was the case in
this 1957 bungalows kitchen when
the home was bought by Style at
Home executive editor Suzanne
Moutis and her husband, Koz, in
2004. We were drawn to all the
light in the house, but the kitchen
had been redone in the 1980s and
had fallen victim to a mass of
brown-stained cabinetry, black
appliances, faux Tiffany lamps and

It was dark and dreary. In addi-
tion, every mod kitchen con known
