LESSON PLAN VELS

Lesson Topic: Practising and Using Skills to Understand and play Netball
Date: 27.04.15

VELS Domain(s): Health and Physical Education

Grade/Level: Grade 3

VELS Dimensions(s): Health Knowledge and Promotion

Duration of Lesson: 120 minutes

Part of Learning Focus Statement:

Through modified major games (for example, games with modified rules,
equipment, playing field, length of game or numbers on a team), students
begin to apply their skills in sport-specific settings.

Part of Standard(s) and Learning Outcome(s):

At Level 3, students are working toward the Level 4 standards (Movement
and Physical Activity)
Apply pre learned skills such as running, throwing and catching in a
game of netball.
Understand the role of the seven positions in a game of netball.
Work with peers to demonstrate understanding of fair play.

Indicators (2 or 3)
Students are able to catch a ball when standing still and when
running.
When playing a game of netball, students know which thirds they are
allowed to play in, depending on the position that they are
representing.
Students discussing with their team strategies for effective play

Assessment:

Success Criteria (2 or 3 to match indicators)

Students can effectively catch and throw a ball when either running
or standing still.
Students correctly explain and demonstrate the role and the rules of
the seven different positions in a game of netball.
Students consistently display the concept of fair play when practising
skills and during a competitive sport setting.

Opportunities to Provide Feedback:

When students are working in small groups (2 or 3) throwing and
catching the ball, the teacher will be able to observe what each
group is doing and provide appropriate feedback, demonstration and
encouragement.
Golden Child game this is a whole class game that sees the class
broken up into two teams. The teacher will be able to observe each
students shooting for goals skills and strategies, and be able to
provide feedback for improvement that the whole class will receive.
Listing Rules and Positions of Netball Students will engage in a class
discussion and be given the opportunity to voice what they already
know about netball. The teacher will write these points on the
whiteboard (even if students are incorrect). After all students have
had the opportunity to voice their ideas, students will be given
feedback from the teacher on the specifics of rules and positions.
This will give the students the opportunity to see what was already
known and become aware of what needs to be learnt throughout the
duration of the lesson.
While students play the modified game of netball, the teacher will be
able to verbally provide feedback on what the students are doing
well while playing, and give constructive advice on how to improve
their skills to better the teams playing style.
At the conclusion of the lesson, students will reflect on the lesson as
a whole class with the class teacher, and be asked to identify where
in the lesson they saw fair play happening. This is an opportunity for
the class teacher to state what he/she was impressed with and list
what may need to be worked on in future lessons, before students
individually complete reflection survey post class.

Teaching Focus:

A. (chosen by Associate Teacher)

My associate teacher would like me to focus on my questioning when
having class discussions about the rules and specific positions of
netball
B. Your personal choice of skill development
My personal chosen focus for this lesson is to finish the lesson
strongly and relate the lesson back to the learning outcomes.

Background to the learning:

A. Teacher (teacher resources to inform your content knowledge)

The Netball Handbook by Jane Woodlands
Netball Rules by Kelly Robinson
Understanding Physical Education by Ken Green

Lesson Plan S00174477

The class discussion about the rules and seven positions in a game of
netball will give the teacher knowledge about what the students
know about how a netball game is played and what is involved in
playing a game of netball
It is assumed that in previous lessons, students have had more
practice in catching and throwing a ball, and practising shooting for
goal. This lesson is purely about briefly revisiting those skills and
implementing them into a sports specific setting (a modified game of
netball)
Students have also previously been taught that in a game of netball,
moving is limited when in possession of the ball and how the court is
broken up into thirds.
Lesson Resources:
Set of netball balls
x2 netball rings on x1 basketball/netball court
Netball bibs x2 sets
Coloured sashes x2 to differentiate 2 teams in warm up games
(yellow and green)

Catering for Diversity

Explain behavioural expectations at the start of the lesson
Use pictures to clarify understanding of behaviour and activities
Write a class schedule on the whiteboard so it is visible for all
students and they know what is going to happen in the lesson
Allow students to use a bigger ball when practising their catching
skills
Position the goals slightly lower than usual (lower height)

Content of Lesson:

A. Introduction 10
minutes
Gain the students attention while they are sitting on the floor.
Possible attention getting techniques include:
- A short game of Simon Says, with the last action being locking
mouths and throwing the key away
- Instead of the original 1,2,3 eyes on me, slightly change it to
1,2,3 waterfall students are able to respond with making the
sound of a waterfall; sshhhhhh.
Ask students what they have been learning and practising in
previous physical education lessons. Questions include:
- Who can remind me what we did last week in P.E?
- *Mary, what is something new that you learnt last week?
Explain that in this lesson, students will be using those previously
learned skills in the two warm up games and finally in a game of
netball that they will be playing together in the final stage of the
lesson.
Have displayed on the whiteboard the learning outcomes for lesson.
Explain to the students that this is what they will be working on
throughout the duration of the lesson and will be expected to be
able to demonstrate at the end of the lesson. Clearly go through
each learning outcome and give students examples of when they

are going to be practised throughout the lesson. This will ensure

students know exactly what is expected of them during the lesson.

B. Development
60 minutes
(6 steps each with a focus question)

Focus Question 1: How can we effectively throw and catch a ball

when standing skill?
Organise the students in pairs or in groups of 3 (depending on
numbers)
Instruct the pairs and/or groups to collect a ball and find a space so
that they can throw the ball to each other (both long and short
distances)
Have the students practice throwing and catching the ball while
standing still for approximately 7 minutes.
While the students are undertaking this activity/exercise, ask them
to think about what important skills and strategies they are focusing
on and using that are enabling them to throw and catch the ball
accurately (for example, watching the ball when catching, using
effective underarm and overarm throwing).

Focus Question 2: How can we effectively throw and catch a ball

when running?
Using the same groups for Focus Question 1, instruct the students
to start at one end of the court. One student starts running forward
while calling for another student to throw the ball to them while on
the move. When the student catches the ball, the next student
begins running and catches the ball.
Follow this exercise up and down the court for approximately 7
minutes.
This activity will enable students to practice catching the ball while
running and making a call for the ball. This is the type of skill
involved when playing netball.

Focus Question 3: How can we improve your shooting for goal

skills? GOLDEN CHILD GAME
Break the class up into two even teams.
Instruct one team to line up one by one in front of the netball ring.
This team will be the shooting team.
Instruct the other team to line up one by one on the edge of the
court. They will be running around the entire outside of the court,
aiming to complete one full lap.
Instruct the shooting team to take turns shooting for goal, while the
other team is running around the court. Each time a goal is scored,
the shooting team must yell out STOP and the runner must stop,
enabling the next runner to proceed.
Explain that the last runner is called the golden child, and collects
all the stopped runners along the way. The aim is for the golden
child to complete one full lap around the court so the running team
can win, or for the shooting team to score a goal while the golden
child is running so the shooting team can win.

EDFD Assessment Task 2 Kara Myers
Lesson Plan S00174477

Ask the runners to focus on listening for the stop call and how they
can quickly and effectively stop. This practice matches the skill of
listening to team players and being able to stop and not step when
a call is caught during a game of netball.
Ask the shooters to focus on their shooting skills and for all the
students to observe each other. This will encourage students to
learn from each other and help each other to become better
shooters.
Play 2 games of Golden Child, to ensure both teams have a turn at
both the running and shooting for goal roles (approximately 10
minutes).

Focus Question 4: How can we all work together to achieve goals

and play fairly with each
other? NETBALL NUMBER GAME
Break the class up into two even teams different from the groups in
the Golden Child game. This gives the students the opportunity to
work with different people.
Give one team the green sashes and the other team the yellow
sashes
Number each student (1, 2, 3, 4..12,etc).
Explain that the aim of the game is to work together to move down
the court to score a goal.
The teacher is to call out the numbers, and those students from
each team run onto the court using normal netball rules previously
learned to score a goal.
While playing this game, ask the students to focus on implementing
their skills into a sports specific setting (this is a form of a modified
netball game).
Also instruct the students to think about concepts of fair play, and
how to show good sportsmanship in sports specific settings.
Play this game for approximately 20 minutes, ensuring all students
have had a turn.

Focus Question 5: What are the main rules we have to adhere to

when playing a game of
netball? Why are the important?
Call the class to the floor and use an attention getting technique to
gain their attention.

EDFD Assessment Task 2 Kara Myers
Lesson Plan S00174477

Have a brief discussion about the warm up games and ask if there
was anything new they learned or anything else that they would like
to practice more.
Focus the discussion onto the rules of netball. Ask the students
what are the rules of netball. As the teacher, write these ideas up
on the whiteboard in the form of a concept map, with the title
RULES being the heading of the middle bubble.
List all suggestions, even if they are wrong. After all students have
had the chance to voice their suggestions, pin point the main rules
of netball purely for the purpose of todays introductory lesson to
netball in a sports specific setting. The main rules include:
- No continuous stepping/running while you have the ball in your
hands
- You may take one step as you throw the ball
- You may take one step as you shoot for goal but not land the
opposite foot on the ground (this would be classed as taking two
steps not one step).
- Ensure you demonstrate these rules to the class so they can
visually see what is expected. You could also ask the students to
demonstrate these rules and assist or correct them in adjusting
their demonstration so the instruction of the rule is clear to the
rest of the class.

Focus Question 6: What are the seven positions involved in a

netball game? What do they
mean? Where are we allowed on the court in
each position?
Focus the discussion now onto the seven positions played in a game
of netball.
Ask the students if they can identify each position. Use the netball
bibs that have the initials of each position printed on them for the
purpose of prompting the students.
Also write the full name of the positions up on the whiteboard in the
form of a concept map, (Wing attack, Centre, Goal shooter, etc.).
Under each position briefly list the role of each player so they
students know exactly what their purpose is when playing the
game.
- For example; Goal shooter aims to catch the ball from other
players and shoot for goal. They are only allowed in the first third
(attacking third).
- For example; Centre is allowed anywhere on the court apart
from the goal circles.
- Please be reminded that students have had discussions and
practices of how the court is broken up into three sections for a
game of netball.

Lesson Plan S00174477

C. Consolidation and Practice 35

minutes
(4 to 6 steps)
Explain that the students are going to be playing a mini game of
netball and the rules for each players positioning will apply.
Encourage students to help everyone in the class, not just their
team members, while playing.
- Suggest; nicely pointing out to class members if they are in the
wrong area is a concept of fair play, and is one of our learning
goals for this lesson
- Explain that; this game is to consolidate all the skills we have
learned about netball over the past few lessons and to help each
other refine our skills and show good sportsmanship, not to just
win the game.
Break the class into two even teams. Give seven players on each
team a netball bib. Play for a timed period of 8-10 minutes to give
everyone a turn.
Roles for players who not playing on the court, include positive tips
and coaching from the sidelines in a courteous manner and score
taking for their team.

D. Closure
15 minutes
Nominate one person from each team to collect their teams bibs
and round the students together on the floor so they can easily view
the learning outcomes addressed at the beginning of the lesson.
Ask the following questions in relation to the learning goals:
- How to we feel with catching and throwing the ball? What about
shooting for goal? Did anyone learn any new skills or strategies
for these activities?
- Who can name one position in a game of netball? (for example
the response is Wing Attack).
- Who can tell me where Wing Attack is allowed on the court?
(repeat the above question and this question until all positions
are discussed)
- Who can give me an example of where they saw concepts of fair
play and good sportsmanship?
Discuss what is going to occur in the next P.E lesson:
- Next time we are going to play more netball, but for a longer
period of time.
- We are also going to be playing with the other grade 3 class, so
we can have 2 games going at once.
- Dont forget the rules and positions that we have discussed and
practiced today.
- Before next lesson, have a brainstorm by yourself about how you
can improve your skills and work with your team and your
competitors fairly.
