pleura that attaches lung to the dorsal
thoracic wall

DIAPHRAGM - separates thoracic cavity

from abdominal cavity

O: Ribs, sternum, vertebrae

I: central tendon

CENTRAL TENDON OF THE DIAPHRAGM

- connective tissue forming a circular
tendon in the center of the diaphragm
The Peritoneal Cavity and its
Contents
PERITONEAL CAVITY - abdominal cavity,
anterior wall formed by diaphragm

PERITONEUM - membrane that lines the

peritoneal cav

PARIETAL PERITONEUM - inside the

body wall

VISCERAL PERITONEUM (Serosa) - part

of peritoneum that is deflected from the
body wall, passes over the surface of the
viscera, and forms a covering layer for all
the viscera
The Peritoneal Cavity and its
Contents
MESENTERIES - double-walled membranes

DORSAL MESENTERY

VENTRAL MESENTERY - region of the liver

and urinary bladder

LIVER - shaped to fit concave surface of

diaphragm; FIVE LOBES: Left lateral, Left
median, Right median (cystic fossa - where
the gall bladder is located), Right lateral,
Caudate

GALL BLADDER

GREATER OMENTUM - thin membrane

covering the small intestine, impregnated with
streaks of fat

intestine, constriction; Pyloric sphincter

Rugae - folds, increase SA for distention/

stretching of stomach for food space
The Peritoneal Cavity and its
Contents
SPLEEN - mottled purple and gray; mechanical
filtration of RBC, recycles iron, reserve of blood,
monocytes, synthesises antibodies

GREATER OMENTUM - contains lesser

peritoneal sac

Question: If the lesser peritoneal sac is the

cavity contained within the greater
momentum, what is the greater peritoneal
sac?

GASTROSPLENIC LIGAMENT - GO between

stomach and spleen

GASTROCOLIC LIGAMENT - secondary

fusion, between mesogaster and mesentery of
intestine
