Course Description
: This is a three unit course which focuses on the acquisition of skill in analyzing simple and complex
English sentences, developing the ability to use the meta-language of grammar with care and
explain the form,meaning, and use of the various elements of grammar. Learners in this course will
identify the various parts of the sentence, draw tree diagrams and use technical syntactic terms like
adjunct, complementizer, ellipsis, lexical category, modal, and wh-movement. This course also
serves as an introduction to the fundamentals of language study with equal emphasis on the sound,
word, sentence, meaning, and discourse patterns of English. Essential topics, such as applications of
linguistics to the teaching of English language and literature, varieties of grammar, and linguistic
descriptions of styles and registers are an integral part of it. This course is also designed to
introduce students the English language features by examining phonology, morphology, syntax,
foreign influences, and related topics.

General Objectives Upon completion of this course, the students are expected to :
:
1. describe how English sentences are constructed ;

2. develop the skills necessary to analyze sentence structure;

3. use some of tools and methods of modern linguistics;

4. have acquired skill in analyzing simple and complex English sentences , explain and justify
analysis to other people;

5. draw tree diagrams and use confidently technical syntactic terms like adjunct, complementizer,
ellipsis, lexical category,

modal, and wh-movement.;

6. specify thoroughly English language features by examining phonology, morphology, syntax,


foreign influences, and

related topics.

7. apply linguistics to the teaching of English language and literature, varieties of grammar, and
linguistic descriptions of

styles and registers as integral part of the course;
