OAllaah,thereisnoeaseexceptwhatYoumakeeasy.AndifYouwish,Youmakethe

TheMuslimstudentputshistrustinAllaahwhenfacingthetestsofthisworld,andhe
seeksHishelpwhilstfollowingtheprescribedmeans,inaccordancewiththewordsofthe
Prophet(peaceandblessingsofAllaahbeuponhim):

ThestrongbelieverisbeerandismorebelovedtoAllaahthantheweakbeliever,
althoughbotharegood.Strivetoaainthatwhichwillbenetyouandseekthehelpof
Allaah,anddonotfeelhelpless.(SaheehMuslim,hadeethno.2664)

Amongthosemeansarethefollowing:

TurningtoAllaahbymakingduaainanywaythatisprescribedinIslam,suchas
saying,Rabbiyishrahlisadriwayassirliamri(OmyLord,expandmychestandmake
thingseasyforme).

Geingusedtosleepingearlyandgoingtoexamsontime.

Preparingallrequiredorpermiedequipmentsuchaspens,rulersandsetsquares,

calculatorsandwatches,becausebeingwellpreparedhelpsonetoanswerquestions.

Recitingtheduaaforleavingthehouse:Bismillaah,tawakkaltualaAllaah,walaa
hawlawalaaquwwataillaBillaah.Allaahummainniaoodhubikaanadillaawudalla,
awazillaawuzalla,awazlimaawuzlama,awajhalaawyujhalaalayya(Inthenameof
Allaah,IputmytrustinAllaah,andthereisnostrengthandnopowerexceptwith
Allaah.OAllaah,IseekrefugewithYoulestIshouldstrayorbeledastray,lestIslip
(commitasinunintentionally)orbetripped,lestIoppressorbeoppressed,lestIbehave
foolishlyorbetreatedfoolishly).Donotforgettoseekyourparentsapproval,fortheir
duaaforyouwillbeanswered.

MentionthenameofAllaahbeforeyoustart,formentioningthenameofAllaahis
prescribedwhenbeginninganypermissibleaction;thisbringsblessing,andseekingthe
helpofAllaahisoneofthemeansofstrength.

FearAllaahwithregardtoyourclassmates,anddonotbeaectedbytheiranxietyorfear
justbeforetheexam,foranxietyisacontagiousdisease.Instead,makethemfeeloptimistic
bysayinggoodwordsasprescribedinIslam.TheProphet(peaceandblessingsofAllaahbe
uponhim)wasoptimisticwhenheheardthenameofSuhayl(whichmeanseasy)andhe
said:Thingshavebeenmadeeasyforyou.HeusedtoliketohearthewordsYaa
Raashid,whenhewentoutforanypurpose.Sobeoptimisticthatyouandyourbrothers
willpassthisexam.

RememberingAllaah(dhikr)dispelsanxietyandtension.Ifsomethingistoodicultfor
you,thenpraytoAllaahtomakeiteasyforyou.WheneverShaykhalIslamIbnTaymiyah
(mayAllaahhavemercyonhim)foundsomethingtoodiculttounderstand,hewould
say,OYouWhotaughtIbraaheem,teachme;OYouWhocausedSulaymaanto
understand,causemetounderstand.

Chooseagoodplacetositduringtheexam,ifyoucan.Keepyourbackstraight,andsiton
thechairinahealthymanner.

Lookovertheexamrst.Studiesadvisespending10%oftheexamtimeinreadingthe
questionscarefully,notingtheimportantwordsanddividingonestimebetweenthe
questions.

Plantoanswertheeasyquestionsrst,thenthedicultones.Whilstreadingthe
questions,writenotesandideaswhichyoucanuseinyouranswerslater.

Answerquestionsaccordingtoimportance.

Startbyansweringtheeasyquestionswhichyouknow.Thenmoveontothequestions
whichcarryhighmarks,andleavetilltheendthequestionstowhichyoudonotknowthe
answers,orwhichyouthinkwilltakealongtimetoproduceananswerorwhichdonot
carrysuchhighmarks.

Takeyourtimetoanswer,fortheProphet(peaceandblessingsofAllaahbeuponhim)
said:DeliberationisfromAllaahandhasteisfromtheShaytaan.(Ahasanhadeeth.Saheehal
Jaami,3011).

Thinkcarefullyabouttheanswerandchoosetherightanswerwhenansweringmultiple
choicequestions.Dealwiththeminthefollowingmanner.Ifyouaresurethatyouhave

choicequestions.Dealwiththeminthefollowingmanner.Ifyouaresurethatyouhave
chosentherightanswer,thenbewareofwaswasah(insinuatingwhispersfromthe
Shaytaan).Ifyouarenotsure,thenstartbyeliminatingthewrongorunlikelyanswers,then
choosethecorrectanswerbasedonwhatyouthinkismostlikelytobecorrect.Ifyou
guessedatacorrectanswerthendonotchangeitunlessyouaresurethatitiswrong
especiallyifyouwilllosemarksforawronganswer.Researchindicatesthatthecorrect
answerisusuallythatwhichthestudentthinksofrst.

Inwrienexams,collectyourthoughtsbeforeyoustarttoanswer.Writeanoutlinefor
youranswerwithsomewordswhichwillindicatetheideaswhichyouwanttodiscuss.
Thennumbertheideasinthesequenceinwhichyouwanttopresentthem.

Writethemainpointsofyouransweratthebeginningoftheline,becausethisiswhatthe
examinerislookingfor,andhemaynotseewhatheislookingforifitisinthemiddleof

Devote10%ofthetimeforreviewingyouranswers.Takeyourtimeinreviewing,
especiallyinmathematicalproblemsandwritingnumbers.Resistthedesiretohandinthe

Ifyoudiscoveraftertheexamthatyouansweredsomequestionsincorrectly,thentake
thatasalessonintheimportanceofbeingwellpreparedinthefuture,andnotrushingto
answerquestions.AcceptthewillanddecreeofAllaahanddonotfallpreytofrustration
anddespair.RememberthehadeethoftheProphet(peaceandblessingsofAllaahbeupon
him),Ifanythingbefallsyou,donotsay,IfonlyIhaddonesuchandsuch.Rathersay,
QadarAllaahwamaashaakaan(thedecreeofAllaahandwhatHewillshappened),for
sayingifonlyopensthedoorfortheShaytaan.(SaheehMuslim,andtherstpartofthis
hadeethwasmentionedabove).

Notethatcheatingisharaamwhetheritisinforeignlanguagetestsoranyothertests.The
Prophet(peaceandblessingsofAllaahbeuponhim)said,Whoevercheatsisnotoneof
us.Itiswrongdoinganditisaharaammeansofaainingadegreeorcerticate,etc.,that
youhavenorightto.Theconsensusisthatcheatingisakindofcooperationinsinand
transgression.Sodowithoutthatwhichisharaam,andAllaahwillsuceyoufromHis
bounty.Rejectalloersofharaamthingsthatcometoyoufromothers.Whoevergivesupa
thingforthesakeofAllaah,Allaahwillcompensatehimwithsomethingbeer.Youhaveto
denounceandresistevil,andtelltheauthoritiesaboutanysuchthingthatyouseeduring
theexam,orbeforeorafterit.Thisisnottheforbiddenkindofslanderratheritis
denouncingevilwhichisobligatory.

AdvisethosewhobuyorsellquestionsorpostthemontheInternetetc.,orwhopreparecheat
notes.TellthemtofearAllaah,andtellthemoftherulingonwhattheyaredoingandonthe
moneytheyearnfromthat.Tellthemthatthetimetheyarespendinginpreparingthese
haraamthings,iftheyspentitinstudying,oransweringpreviousexams,orhelpingone
anothertounderstandthesubjectbeforetheexam,thatwouldbebeerforthemthandoing
theseharaamthings.
