Introduction
Hollywood!

Most people believe Hollywood Myths, about Society collapsing 1 hour after Supermarkets close
for good.
With entire Countries making do with Blockades, Invasions, and intense Bombings, in various
Wars, that notion should not hold water, but there you have it; Some people aren't that aware of
the Past.

While Smokeless Powder is not a simple product to make, traditional Fireworks Black-Powder
is, and with the modern Shotgun Cartridges, there is no need to revert to Muzzle-loading
Muskets.
However, there's a reason why breech-loading, specially Semi-Auto and Automatic, Firearms,
only took off with smokeless Powder, Black-Powder fouls things up! It can corrode the Firing
mechanism of a breech-loading Firearm in no time.

And, there's the problem of manufacturing Primers; Not a very easy thing to achieve, under dire
circumstances.

The Daisy V/L

Enter the amazing Daisy V/L Design:

You use compressed air to detonate the propellant, so no need for a Firing Pin, no need for
Primers, all the relevant parts are protected.
If that was invented on Musket times WHAT would be today's Modern Firearms? One can only
speculate...

But that solves a lot of Design and Manufacture problems, namely:

-No Primer;
-No Firing Pin;
-No Corrosion from Gases, at least, on the most sensitive parts.

So a simple Wax or Plastic Seal can cover a Cartridge's Primer hole, and most anything that will
explode with fire, can be Ammo Propellant!
This book deals with the simplest Design, a one-shot Shotgun, and it's made using Materials
anyone can find, Seamless tubing, Sheet Metal bent around to fit it, and simple metal parts you
can make with a Hobby Lathe, and common Tools.

More elaborate notions, like Semi-auto and Auto-Firing Mechanisms can be imagined.

But I think before you achieve even the need for that, chances are, due to the re-establishment of
some kind of Ordered Society, Industry will be re-established, and these guns will be honorably
retired into sparing Hunters' Cabins, Collector's walls, Pilot Survival Kits, and the like.

So let's see how you can make air fire some shots...

CHAPTER 1
How the Daisy-Heddon V/L works
Let's see how to make air ignite Black Powder;

Here's the ingenious concept of the Daisy-Heddon V/L, and keep in mind that Manufacturing
with the intent of SELLING a Patented idea, will get you into trouble, while for your own
amusement, you're free to make it:
Air is forced into an Ignitor, also called Obturator, a Chamber where it is compressed into
becoming a Blowtorch, and when the propellant blows, the ball blocks the gases from going
back.
Not only it has no Firing Pin, the ignition is achieved by blowing Air into the propellant at
Blowtorch temperatures, but the gases from the explosion are blocked by the simplest of Valves,
a no-return Ball Valve!

So how do you make one at home?

You get a Lathe and a Drill Press, to machine an Ignitor chamber, that plugs into a Receiver
block, plug the ball into the chamber, a pin holds the Ball bearing sphere behind it, and goes
trough the chamber and the breech block, and holds it all together.

Here's all the parts, once put together:

All of that is put in front of a regular Air Gun setup, notice 3 of the 4 pins holding the Seamless
Tube to the back part, that holds the spring...

And use a simple Zip-gun trigger arrangement, for good measure!

As we're not using .22 caseless Ammo, if you use a good amount of gunpowder, a small plate
inside the shotgun shell will prevent an excess of gases going back, as it shuts back that primer
hole, the bent plate's arch is exaggerated, on the drawing, a flatter one might be more fast to shut
down the hole.

The ammo needs a seal, of course, plastic or even paraffin wax, that will keep moisture out, and
black-powder in, but will burn away, when the compressed air blows like a torch.

So, with all these parts, and some more, you can make a very efficient Shotgun you can make
ammo for, out of spent casings, old time Gunpowder, and Lead slugs or any kind of shot, and re-
load that ammo with ease.

REMEMBER: You CAN manufacture anything legal to manufacture, according to what

can be made, following your Country's Laws, for yourself.
But you cannot sell any number of Patented products, doing so will get you a Law Suit
from Daisy Outdoor Products, the legal owner of the Patents protecting this Daisy-Heddon
V/L idea.

How the Shotgun operates

Once assembled, this Shotgun will look like this, remember, but what operating the thing?

To make the air pump ready, you pull the piston back, by operating the lever that's on the
shotgun's butt plate, that will pull the piston back until it's locked into position by the O-Ring.
Pull the trigger, and the gun will shoot!

How the Shotgun feeds

It's a break-open Shotgun, so it will open with a common door-latch piece, the ambidextrous
handle being pulled back, a very simple extractor will plug out the shotgun shell.
When you re-load, you snap the shotgun shut, the latch will close into the latch recess, and the
Shotgun's loaded.

Now we have all of that covered, let's go to Chapter 2, concerning the Assembling.

CHAPTER 2
Assembling the Shotgun
Bending the plate
This is a very simple to make gun, all it takes is Seamless Mechanical Tubing, 26.99 x 4.06
SMT, to fit 12 Gauge shotgun shell, that's a 18.87 mm inner diameter Seamless tube.

You take pieces of Metal Plate, to be bent around some Steel bar of that diameter, and bend the
Plate parts, one with a spacing plate of twice the plate's thickness, because that part will envelop
the front part.

Since you may use different Metal and so, different thickness for it, I won't give you an all-
around Template , and I advise you to first bend the plates, not already cut to the Flat-surface
Templates.
Have the Plate parts have some allowance for mistakes, that is, an Inch or two larger than the
Area of the flat Templates, plus the part that goes around the tubes, some testing is advised, just
wound a strip of plate around, and see what it took from the overall strip's length.

Then, take the Templates, and cut, drill and file.

The two parts will fit this way_

Slide the arts away from the rod, and drill the holes on the round parts.

After that, you add some wood plate, for the Stock, Brass and/or Steel rods, two springs, and
some blocks of Round Bar, to make the 2-part Ignitor, and with some bolts, bits and bobs, you
get a Shotgun.

But the main part is, of course, the Ignitor. It's a 4-piece job, 2 parts made with a lathe and a Drill
Press, a Ball bearing sphere, and a pin to connect it all.

The measurements I provide, on these cutaway drawings are based on the Illustration, and you
can always experiment with other sizes, but these, we know they work:

The Ignitor
Here's the Ignitor Chamber, a straightforward Lathe and Drill Press job, the measurements are in
Millimeters. Any online calculator will translate that into the Imperial system of Inches, if you
want.

Now, the Receiver Block, you plug the seamless tube into this, to fit between the 2 parts, you
might have to machine it according to the tube's wall thickness:

All together, now:

Templates
These templates are relative to a 12 Gauge, but you can regard them as proportion Templates,
rather than Dimensional ones, since there's an infinite number of variables, here, the plate's
thickness, the caliber you'll use, the air pump, etc.
So here's 2 drawings you can take as a base for your development, or take them as they are, in
which case, amplify the drawings, until the depicted shell fits the 12 Gauge diameter.
A side view, parallel projection, how it all fits:

...And the various pieces the wood plates are shown inner plate to outer plate, from top to
bottom, staring from the center one, they're 5, but only the center one and the 2 on the left are
shown, the 2 on the right are symmetrical, to the 2 outer, but in reverse order.

So, go and experiment, and do it the SAFE way;

Test the Seamless Tubing, test the pump system, test the ammo, THEN, start building the
Shotgun.

Have fun!
