Chapter 9 Project
Our stats class wanted to see the average in Fowler High School of the time
students spend on facebook. We started by stating a null and alternate hypothesis. Our
null hypothesis was that the average time spent on Facebook each night was = 20
mins. Our alternate hypothesis was the <20 mins. Then by randomly choosing and
surveying 30 different students in the high school and asking the question How much
time do you spend on Facebook a night?, we then recorded the results and calculated
the sample mean ( ) and the sample standard deviation. We found them by putting
them into our L1 and running the 1-Var Stats. The sample mean we calculated was
13.83, which was the average time of students spent on facebook per night. Our sample
standard deviation we calculated was 17.30, which was the average interval between
the average times spent by students on facebook.
All this collected information so far based on our hypothesis we decided to use a
left tail for the area of our data. We also had to use a level of significance to help
determine if we should reject or fail to reject our null hypothesis, the level of significance
we choose was .01. The distribution we used was a t distribution. We used this kind of
distribution to help solve our hypothesis because we did a random survey of a select
group of only the Fowler High School students, not the entire school district of Fowler.
Our sample test statistic we calculated was t= -1.96. We found t by using
(x)/( s / n) This value also helps us determine whether or not to reject the null
hypothesis. Once this t value was placed in our table 4 chart, we then found our P
value. The P values we found were P=.025 and P=.050. The P value helps us indicate
strong evidence either against or for the null hypothesis.
After we compared our P values to our level of significance we determined to that
we fail to reject our null hypothesis. We determined to fail to reject because our P value
was a higher number than our level of significance. After failing to reject our null
hypothesis we conclude that Fowler High School students spend on average 20 mins a
night on Facebook. Even though our sample recommended less, it is possible our low
sample mean was due to chance of the sample of students we choose.
