For our problem on pg. 455 # 16 we wanted to find out if there were more flaked stone tools than non flaked stone tools at the excavation site. First, we took our data set and found the difference between the flaked stone tools and the non flaked stones. In order to find the differences you subtract them. One thing we had to make sure we kept consistent was subtracting the flaked stone tools from the non flaked stone tools every time. If we switched by doing it the other way around are answer would have not of meant anything, because we were not consistent when finding the difference. Once we found the differences we took them and plugged into L1 and ran the 1-Var stats. Since we are doing a paired differences problem, we needed to know the d which x mean the same thing because we figured out the differences before we plugged them into L1. We also needed the sd which is the sx in this case. The d is 6.125 and the sx equals 8.07. We then stated our null and alternate hypotheses before we put our numbers into our equation. Our null hypotheses was d=0 and our alternate hypotheses is d> 0. We then stated the level of significance which is .05. The level of significance is one thing that would help us decide if we reject or fail to reject. After we found all the information we then plugged the numbers into our equation. We used the t equation because we did a sample not a population. The equation is t=dd / sd / d . After we plugged all everything in we got 2.141. This number helps us figure out the p-value and to help us decide if we reject or fail to reject. One thing to keep in mind if you use a calculator you have to be careful where you put your parentheses because it can cause your answer to be different. Next, we found our p- value by table 4. We found that our p-value was 0.025+0.050. Our equation then, would be 0.025<p-value<0.050. We found this by using the 1 tail area on table 4. We went down to number 7 on our degrees of freedom and went over to the two number that in between and our value met between 2 values on the degrees of freedom table. This p- value led to our conclusion that we would reject. At the 5% level of significance, the experiment indicates that there is more flaked stone tools than non flaked stone tools at the excavation site.
