Lesson Focus: Aerobic Dance Evaluations Grade: 9 Technology Used: Music, Video Camera, HR Monitors
Lesson Intro (What will you say to get the students attention, communicate the lesson objectives, and motivate students to achieve them?):
Okay ladies, todays our big day! Im super excited to see what each group has created. Fortunately, a close friend of mine is letting us borrow 4 of his
schools Polar Gofit heart rate monitors. You all have been assigned a number during attendance earlier. This was assigned alphabetically. Before your
group starts you will come type in your number to the Polar website so you can see your heart rate projected on the whiteboard. This holds you
accountable to see if you are in your target zone or not. You will also hand in your typed paper over your aerobic dance. Lastly, I will record you so I can
reference back to the videos to properly grade you based on the rubric.
A) The student will have an understanding of how hard their body A) Teacher observation
needs to work in order to reach their target heart rate zone. B) Grading rubric
B) The student works as a team member throughout the dance unit. C) Grading rubric
C) The students receive an 85% or higher based on the rubric criteria
Safety considerations and/or modifications for special needs students:
Student X is in a group of three. Student X and her group members were told any modifications necessary for Student X are perfectly fine. I told Student
X to do her best to reach her THR zone. Continue to check up on her heart rate manually. Because she does not do a ton of physical activity outside of
P.E., she is likely to reach her zone.
Learning Activities
Time Formation Activity Transitions; Comments
8:55 Use remainder of class time to watch the girls perform Footloose, which was learned on
Scattered day 2 of the dance unit
Closure (What will you say and do to help students recall the lesson objectives and recognize what theyve learned? How will you meet one or more of the
following goals: review, accountability, cool-down, recognition, interpersonal communication, future plans?):
It came to my attention throughout the time you were practicing that a lot of you did not understand what an aerobic move looked like. My purpose of
this was to show you that you ALL are capable of creating fun exercise for yourselves, by using your imagination and understanding how your heart rate
works. Awesome job by everyone! I am impressed with the dances you created! Transition to Footloose to end class.
I thought about giving the girls an option to submit their videos through email in case they did not feel comfortable, but Im glad I did not. Wherever
they decide to go in life, they will have to stand in front of people and perform, speak, etc., whatever it is I hope this experience helped break any fears
they had previously. The girls got to visually see, that everyone in class is different. That some have to work harder to get their heart rate up. I told them
that some may have to modify the aerobic dance to become more advanced in order to reach their target zone. Next time this unit is taught I would like to
demonstrate myself what an aerobic dance looks like. The girls were able to see videos of classes from previous years, but it did not really stick with them.
Next time I will go over/demonstrate and have them mock different aerobic movements that may help them a little more.
Summative Assessment
This week you will be working in groups of 2-4 to create your own personal Aerobic Dance Routine and then present the routines to the class. You may take steps from other
dances and combine them into your dance, but the dance has to be a new dance created from your minds (you may not copy an entire dance/routine from the internet).
Requirements for the aerobic project are:
1. Find a song or music that is clean and school appropriate at least 3 minutes in length.
2. Create aerobic movements continuously for the entire song, for full credit you must have 10 or more different aerobic moves. Make sure song
is long enough to have at least 10 moves.
3. The routine must flow smoothly with the music and the routine must be rehearsed or memorized. Everyone in the group must be in sync and
know the routine.
4. Routine will be presented to class and class with follow along with routine.
5. Full participation and cooperation with your group.
6. Routine must be typed out with movements listed.
TIP: To ensure you will meet your heart rate zone with the aerobic movements you have selected, check your heart rate manually periodically throughout class time.
The entire project is worth 30 points. Make sure you look over the grading rubric so you know how you going to be graded.
