1/1 Question 9
COM 2.1 You are testing an unknown solid. Below is a list of observations that you have made during your tests:

can be scratched with your finger nail

shiny, reflects light
not able to dissolve in water

1/1 Question 10
COM 2.2 Which of the following would not be a physical seperation technique?

a. Burning

b. Filtering

c. Evaporation

d. Sifting

2/2 Question 11
COM 2.2: You have a mixture of Cheerios, sugar, and glass marbles. Explain the physical separation method you would
2 use to separate the sugar from the other two substances then state what physical property of sugar allowed you to use
/2
this method.

First you would pour water into the mixture to dissolve the sugar and have the cheerios and glass marbles float to the
top. The solubility of the sugar would allow you do use this method. You would then go about to use a filter of some
sort of device that would hold back the cheerios and glass marbles from the sugar water once you pour the mixture
through. The large structure of the marbles and cheerios would allow you to use this method. Once you have the
cheerios and glass marbles out, you would heat the sugar water to evaporate the water. The fact that the water has a
lower evaporation point than the sugar would allow you do use this method. You would then have the sugar left in the
cup or container and the cheerios and glass marbles would be separated as well.

1/1 Question 12

b. Section B

c. Section C

d. Section D

3/3 Question 13
COM 3.1 The graph below shows the heating of distilled water, explain how the thermal energy transferring into the
3 system affects the speed of the molecules, the temperature of the water and the attractive forces between molecules
/3
during Sections B and D.

When thermal energy is transferring into the system during sections B and D, the temperature of the water does not
change and remains constant. This means that the speed of the molecules does not change and also remains constant.
The thermal energy transferring into the system in sections B and D rather goes towards decreasing the attractive
forces which determine the phase of the matter.
