LESSON MEASURABLE LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Students will learn the skills necessary to be a good listener. Students will also be responsible for
identifying one or two things they heard while completing the listening activity.
MATERIALS USED/RESOURCES
The school counselor will introduce the lessons topic of Listening by saying: It is so
important to be a good listener because this is one way in how we learn. The school
counselor will then ask the students: What does someone who is listening looks like? After
having a few students respond in what they think listening looks like, the school counselor will
then remind the students of the meaning of schools Give me 5 slogan: 1) listening ears, 2)
eyes forward, 3) quiet mouth, 4) hands to self, and 5) feet still. The school counselor will then
read the book Listen and Learn by Cheri J. Meiners. Following the book, the school counselor
will then ask the students again: What should you do when you are listening? Have a few
students answer the question; then review listening poster with the students: Sit quietly. No
Talking. Look at the person speaking. Listen carefully to what is being said. Try to
understand what has been said. Ask Questions. Finally, the school counselor to have the
students participate in an activity called The Listening Game. The school counselor will instruct
the students to: Close your eyes and listen closely. The students will listen to the sounds around
them (if there are limited sounds the school counselor will create different sounds). The students
should have their eyes closed and listening for about 30 seconds. After the times is up all
students will be able to share the sounds they have heard while listening.
Closing statement: To be a good listener, you need to practice just like you would in a
sport or playing an instrument. So, when you hear your teacher or someone else speaking,
