 Writing this RUNES column
feels kind of strange. For years, this
space has been devoted to the
interests, passions and musings of
Stewart Wieck. Stewart and his
brother Steve began WHITE WOLF
Magazine eight years ago as an
independent gaming magazine - a
place to share their ideas and
creations with others and a forum for
letting others express themselves.
Since its inception under a high-
school photocopier, WHITE WOLF
Magazine has undergone resounding
changes. The magazine got its first
color cover, increased its page count
and received higher quality binding.
Suddenly, all kinds of people were
interested in it, first as an object of
humor when it was joked that
WHITE WOLF would never
survive, then as a legitimate,
professional place to get pub-
lished.
White Wolf as a company
also transformed. The merger with
Lion Rampant resulted in new
creative directions. Soon, the little
company that published a simple
magazine was responsible for (guilty
of?) Ars Magica and Vampire,
Werewolf (a little later), and,
eventually, The Masquerade and
Mage.
WHITE WOLF Magazine grew
alongside its parent company. There
were full-color interiors, artist
showcases and professional awards.
Quite an achievement for the butt of
jokes and a product of the Xerox age.
Even though the magazine has
come a long way, its still changing,
hopefully for the better. With this
issue, WHITE WOLF goes monthly,
after years of promises and failed
attempts. (Subscribers still receive air
the issues thevve ordered. but 12

issues now offer a years coverage, not
two.)
With this issue, Stewart Wieck
also steps down from the editorial
throne. Stewart IS moving on to
mastermind White Wolfs fiction
series, which demands his full
attention.
Whos stepping in for Stewart? I
am. Im Ken Cliffe. Ive know Stu for
years and have helped out on the
magazine for some time. If you play
Ars Magica or The Masquerade, you
may have seen my name.
But what Ive done isnt impor-
tant. What Im going to do is
important. Along with Chris
McDonough, WHITE WOLF Art
Director, and Wes Harris, Marketing

Director, Im taking WHITE WOLF
in a new thematic direction. The
ple
same independent status, with
coverage for all kinds of games, will
persist. The same is true for columns

like The Silicon Dungeon, Cap-
sule Reviews, and Feature Re-

views. (And if this issue seems at all
White Wolf-heavy, blame i t on a
desperate need for material at this
early stage. Its a one-time thing.)
What we want to do is make the
magazine more topical. We want to
offer coverage to new and vital
games, like Underground,
Earthdawn, Vampire, Kult and
Mage. We want to provide a forum
for issues that affect gaming and
garners. We want to offer insight into
issues and entertainments that are of
interest to you. We want the maga-
zine to be controversial, to discuss
matters that dont see print anywhere
else in this industry. We want to take
chances. Go out on a limb. Speak our
mind. And we want to do it with
style.
At this point, 1 notice Ive been
using the word we a lot. It doesnt
just apply to Chris, Wes, myself or
the White Wolf game studio. We
applies to you. Your input is essential
to this magazine. If youre disap-
pointed by something you read, tell
us about it. If you like something, say
so. Most importantly, if you have an
opinion on an issue thats been
raised, make your written voice
heard. Thats what its there for.
So there you have it, WHITE
WOLFSnew direction in a nutshell.
Look this issue over, read it and see
what you think. If it surprises you,
good. If it shocks you, all the better.
If youre inspired to put fingers to
keyboard, fantastic. React to what
weve done. Dont just sit on your ass.
P.S.: White Wolf would like to
thank the producers of the sensation-
alist TV show True Stories of the
Highway Patrol for their October 12,
1993 episode. Its good to know that
people are now being taken in for
playing Vampire and being among
the undead. Thanks also to Trooper
#666 of the Virginia Highway Patrol.
Its good to know that our roads are

social undesirables.

need to see more discussion of this

prior to a convention.
Equally sickening, Ive seen

We need to reply to this
malignant roleplaying scare with
accurate information. If an anti-
gaming article or talk show appears

ing your reaction t o the view given
to the public. Talk to game retailers

in your area. Ask them if anyones
putting pressure o n them t o avoid
certain items. Find out how to stop

this.
Theres an excellent book by

Dave Marsh called 50 Ways to Fight
Censorship. Its full of ideas o n
defending your freedom of thought.
We need t o realize that censorship
is a world-wide problem, and it
wont go away if we ignore it. We
need t o stand up and be counted,
to show that those who care about
their freedom of choice are not an
insignificant group that can be
brushed aside.
I hope this letter will spark
discussion (and hopefully action)
before its too late. I think we need
to act soon to dismantle the hype
and lies surrounding gaming, t o
present gaming as what it is: a
gainful, worthwhile leisure activity.
