The Paul Sacher Foundation was established in 1973, originally to preserve Paul
Sacher's musical estate, a large number of autograph manuscripts collected in
the course of his conducting career. In the last few years, the holdings of the
Foundation in Basel have been expanded and enriched significantly and now
comprise over fiftycollections. The Foundation was also able to acquire the house
"Auf Burg" on the Mnsterplatz, which opened in 1986 after renovation by the
architects Katharina and Wilfrid Steib. Within a short period of time the Paul
Sacher Foundation has achieved the status of an international archive and research
center for twentieth-century music, reflecting the essential currents and devel
opments in that music, as well as the personality and work of its founder.
The original collection came into existence primarily through Paul Sacher's
activity as conductor and patron of contemporary music. Most of the other
collections comprise fairly comprehensive documentation of the creative produc
tion of individual composers. In addition to numerous deposits from institutions,
publishing houses, and private individuals, the Foundation possesses a series of
collections pertaining to important interpreters of new music as well as of other
personalities.
The composition and size of the collections vary widely. Some consist mainly
of manuscript scores; others contain sketches and rough drafts, text manuscripts,
correspondence, parts of personal libraries, and further documentation. The first
half of the twentieth century is represented in particular by Igor Stravinsky's
musical estate and by the Anton Webern Archive, compiled by Hans Molden
hauer. Since their acquisitions, these collections have been supplemented by
further important documents and form two pillars of the archival holdings. Besides
the acquisition of further legacies, the Paul Sacher Foundation has striven in
creasingly to collaborate with contemporary composers.
Over the years, geographic and historical focal points have developed in the
Foundation's holdings. Swiss composers, some of whom have close ties to Paul
Sacher, are represented in abundance. Also prominent are composers associated
with avant-garde movements after 1950.
In addition to the holdings of specific collections, other important elements
of the archives are a library, an audio library, and a video library. While literature
on music of the twentieth century is acquired as comprehensively as possible,
the Foundation's guidelines also provide for acquisition of materials in related
fields: theatre, dance, film, literature, and fine arts. The collections of newspaper
articles and out-of-printor rare titles are another valuable resource of the library.
The growing audio library also contains numerous historic and deleted recordings.
