Curtailment of bars

Maximum steel is needed at the base where the BM is maximum. As the BM decreases
towards the top, steel can be suitably curtailed at one or two levels. Usually steel is curtailed
at one level where the steel quantity is about 50% or 67% of the base steel.
Effective depth is proportional to h
Bending moment is proportional to h3
A st is propotional to B.M/d i.e A st1 / A st2 = h 1 2 / h 2 2
Curtailing 50% bars
1/2 = h 1 2 / h 2 2
h 1 = 3.36m
Point of curtailment = 3.36 - Ld = 2.74m Ld = 47f
Provide 12 mm dia @ 180 mm c/c
Distribution steel = 0.12 % gross area
= 0.12 x 450 x 1000 /100
= 540 mm2
Minimum spacing = 450 or 5d
Provide 10 mm dia @ 140 mm c/c

Secondary steel to take temperature stresses

= 0.12 % gross area
Provide 10 mm dia @ 140 mm c/c

Check for Shear

Max S.F = 67.69 kN
Factored S.F = 101.5 kN
Shear stress, tv Vu/bd = 0.254 N/mm2
tc = 0.38 N/mm2
tc > tv
Hence safe for shear
