La Ciudad de Valparaso est situada en los 33 2 de Latitud Sur y 71 38 de
Longitud Oeste, inserta en la Macrorregin Central de Chile.
Ocupa el fondo de una ensenada que se extiende por 3 kilmetros y que se ha

Morfologa
Su geografa se encuentra representada por una baha, una
estrecha planicie costera y los cerros. La baha es amplia y
profunda; est muy bien protegida por el sur, pero totalmente
abierta al norte, hacia el cual se orienta.
Los cerros, que en la comuna de Valparaso suman 42,

circundando directamente la baha 17 de ellos, tienen una altura
que flucta entre los 25 y los 500 metros. Surcados por una red
de quebradas que se orientan hacia el mar y que son producto
de la erosin producida fundamentalmente por el escurrimiento
de las aguas lluvias. La morfologa del territorio adyacente a la
baha es tambin producto de las regresiones y abrasin marina,
lo cual fue generando varias terrazas y, dentro de ellas, los cerros.
Si bien es difcil percibir actualmente estas terrazas, hay algunos
niveles bastante notorios. El ms alto est a unos 500 metros
sobre el nivel del mar (msnm); luego est el correspondiente al
lmite urbano de la Ciudad de Valparaso, que va a unos 250
msnm. La siguiente terraza va a una altura de entre 100 y 150
msnm; en ella se construy a fines del siglo XIX el Camino
Cintura o Avenida Alemania, destinado a conectar los cerros
entre s. Por ltimo, la terraza ms baja est a unos 70 msnm,
altura de los Cerros Santo Domingo, Concepcin y Barn, siendo
la altura lmite a la que llegan los ascensores.
Toda ciudad, que se distribuye tanto en un valle como tambin

en los cerros, hace mencin al plan cuando el ciudadano comn
se refiere al sector ms bajo y plano de la ciudad, como ocurre
en Valparaso y Via del Mar. En la ciudad de Valparaso la
superficie del plan tal como est actualmente es en buena medida
artificial. La planicie natural de Valparaso era sinuosa y
sumamente estrecha. Hasta el siglo XIX el mar llegaba a las
cercanas de las actuales calles Bustamante, Serrano y Prat. Los
rellenos se realizaron con escombros y sedimentos extrados de
las quebradas y material de los cerros que tambin se excavaron
para aumentar el plan, lo cual explica las abruptas laderas de
muchos de ellos. Las numerosas quebradas favorecieron la
acumulacin de aguas lluvia y sedimentos, lo cual conllev la
apertura natural de espacios, que hasta comienzos del siglo XIX
no tenan uso alguno. Por entonces comenz la realizacin de
obras de urbanizacin: encauzamiento y abovedamiento de cursos
de agua, construccin de tajamares, puentes sobre las quebradas
y trincheras. Los terrenos conquistados se transformaron en
espacios pblicos, que tomaron diversas formas de acuerdo a su
uso y a su naturaleza.
En Valparaso, los grandes ejes transversales, es decir, las

vas que van desde el cerro al plan, se originan en las cajas de
inundacin de estos esteros y quebradas. Muchos de estos cursos
se mantienen como reas verdes naturales. Todo esto enfatiza el
carcter de anfiteatro de Valparaso, con graderas que miran
al mar desde las laderas de los cerros, los pasajes, los quiebres
de las calles, los recodos y las encrucijadas. Una gran gama de
perspectivas propias que permiten a la ciudad mirarse a s

Morfology
Its geography is represented by a bay, a narrow coast

Although it is now hard to distinguish these terraces, there
are some very notorious levels. The highest is located around
