A new mixed-mode biquad circuit is presented. The circuit uses six single-
output plus-type second-generation current-conveyors (CCIIs), a single dual-
output CCII, two grounded capacitors, eight resistors, at least two of them
permanently grounded, and can realize lowpass, highpass, bandpass, notch,
lowpass notch, highpass notch and allpass responses from the same topology.
The circuit can be driven by voltage or current and its output can be voltage or
current. The parameters !0 and !0/Q0 enjoy independent electronic tunability.
Simulation results are included.
1. Introduction
Because of their higher signal bandwidths, greater linearity, wider dynamic
range, simple circuitry and low power consumption (Toumazou et al. 1990), design-
ing current-mode and voltage-mode active lters using the second-generation
plus-type current-conveyor (CCII) continues to attract the attention of many
researchers, (see, e.g. Toumazou and Lidgey 1986, Chang and Chen 1991 a, b,

ences cited therein).
In analog signal processing applications it may be desirable to have active
lters with input currents and/or voltages and output currents and/or voltages,
that is mixed-mode lters (Ramirez-Angulo et al. 1992, Soliman 1996). Careful
inspection of the available literature shows that while mixed-mode realizations
with input current and output voltage are available (Ramirez-Angulo et al.
1992, Soliman 1996), no circuit realization is available for realizing a generalized
mixed mode active lter with input current or voltage and output current or
voltage. It is the major intention of this paper to present such a generalized
mixed mode circuit using the second-generation plus-type current conveyor
(CCII).

The proposed circuit is shown in gure 1. Assuming that the CCII is
characterized by ix iz, iy 0 and vx vy, routine analysis yields the transfer

Inspection of (3) and (4) shows that various inverted and non-inverted mixed-mode
lter functions, with input voltage or current and output voltage or current, can be
realized. For example:
1. With Iin1 Iin2 Iin3 0, the following voltage-mode responses, with input
voltages and output voltage, and mixed-mode responses, with input voltages
and output current are obtained:
a. An inverted highpass-lter (HPF) with Vin1 Vin2 Vin3 Vin4 0 and
Vin5 Vin6 Vin7 . In this case, in addition to resistors R4 and R10, resistors
R2, R5, and R9 will be grounded.

2. With Vin1 Vin2 Vin3 Vin4 Vin5 Vin6 Vin7 0, all resistors will be
grounded and the following current-mode responses, with input currents and
output current, and mixed-mode responses, with input currents and output
voltage , are obtained:
a. A non-inverted HPF with Iin1 Iin2 0.
b. A non-inverting LPF with Iin2 Iin3 0.
c. An inverting BPF with Iin1 Iin3 0.

4. Conclusions
In this paper a new mixed-mode biquad circuit has been presented. The circuit
uses six single-output CCIIs, a single dual-output CCII, two grounded capaci-
tors, eight resistors, at least two of them are permanently grounded and can realize
all the standard biquad lter responses. The parameters of the lter responses enjoy
independent electronic tunability and low passive sensitivities. The circuit can realize
mixed mode lter responses. Thus, a voltage input may result in either a current or

a voltage output. Also, a current input may result in either a current or a voltage
output. While the simulation results conrm the theory presented in this paper,
the discrepancies between the calculated and simulated results are attributed to
the simplied model used in the analysis.
