Literature Review:
Nahar, Ali & Begum (2010) found in their study with direct interview of 90 random sample of
garments workers from the Gazipur district there were strong correlation among the age, working
hours and occupational health hazards like headache, malnutrition, musculoskeletal pain, eye
strain, less appetite, chest pain, fainting, diarrheal disease, hepatitis (jaundice), food poisoning,
asthma, fungal infection, and dermatitis. They found majority of the garments works are
suffering from malnutrition, musculoskeletal pain, and eye strains well as severe headache. They
also suggests that these problems are caused due to long working hours and lack of balanced diet
that the workers took (p. 2-4).

Ahamed (2013) showed in his study based on both primary and secondary data as well as based
on various case studies, journals and thesis papers, annual reports of various organizations on
Improving Social compliance in Bangladesh's Ready-made Garment Industry that most of the
garment factories had poor working condition and faced challenges with social compliance in
spite of having the membership with ILO and a strong labor laws (p.20-21).

In the Study of Safety in RMG industry in Bangladesh (2013) which was conducted by direct
visit to factories from various locations shows that in RMG sector the building safety regulations
are not well developed and at the same time inspection of these factories were inadequate as well
in most of the factories there is a lower level of safety and the safety knowledge among the
workers is insufficient. (p.5-9).

Literature Review:

Firoz (2011) shows in his study to find out why factory buildings for RMG is more hazardous in

Bangladesh and how these hazardous situation can be controlled through intensive interviews of

related parties and by solving case studies there he identified that there are less emergency exits

and catchment angle than the required number, improper design of the exits, complexity and

obstacles on the way of exit and exits are far away from the concentration area while working

with the design of readymade garments industry for fire safety (page. 87).

In a later section Firoz (2011) specified that the interior design of the factory and improper

layout of machines also liable for creating the hazardous conditions whereas the permission for

the buildings are provided on the basis of open plan (Page. 95).

Farther Firoz (2011) also illustrated that about one third of total fire hazard in Bangladesh

especially in Dhaka had occurred due to shock circuit while other reasons are Cigarette, Spark

and over hitting of machines and subsequent impact of panic and stampede in human mind

(page. 29-31).
