Course Code: RES 701 Total Marks: 30
1. It is hypothesized that obesity increases the risk of Type II diabetes in teenage boys.
2. This study is aimed in finding the relationship between regular exercise and the
incidence of postpartum depression.
a) Explain dependent and independent variables with examples. For the above research
topic, identify the dependent and independent variable(s)?
b) Identify the population of the study.
6. Use the following correlation matrix and answer the following question. Assume that all
correlation values are significant at 0.05 level
7. A manufacturer of sprinkler systems designed for fire protection claims that the
average activating temperature is at least 135F. To test this claim, you randomly select a
sample of 32 systems and find the mean activation temperature to be 133F with a
standard deviation of 3.3 F. You want to check if the manufacturers claim is true or
false.
9. The time taken to assemble a car in a certain plant is a random variable having a
normal distribution of 20 hours and a standard deviation of 2 hours. What is the
probability that a car can be assembled at this plant in a period of time:
10. Calcium is an essential mineral that regulates the heart, is important for blood clotting
and for building healthy bones. The National Osteoporosis Foundation recommends a
daily calcium intake of 1000-1200 mg/day for adult men and women.
A study is designed to test whether there is a difference in mean daily calcium intake in
adults with normal bone density, adults with osteopenia (a low bone density which may
lead to osteoporosis) and adults with osteoporosis. Adults 60 years of age with normal
bone density, osteopenia and osteoporosis are selected at random from hospital records
and invited to participate in the study. Each participant's daily calcium intake is measured
based on reported food intake and supplements. The data are shown below:
Normal Bone Density Osteopenia Osteoporosis
(NBD)
1100 1000 890
1000 1000 660
950 700 925

Following is the result of ANOVA test with the significance value set at 0.05:
Study: An experiment is conducted to determine whether the type of tutoring method has
an effect on learning. Three types of tutoring methods A, B and C are considered and the
study is aimed in finding if learning effectiveness is affected by these three methods.
Three randomly chosen groups are tutored separately and then administered proficiency
tests.
Write an abstract for the above study. The abstract should contain the
following:
Identification of research problem
Purpose of the study
Research questions, directional and non-directional hypotheses
Null and alternate hypothesis
Identification of best possible research design for your hypotheses
Sample analysis results
Interpretation & Conclusions
