Clothespin
Index cards or cards with
letters on them.

Anticipatory Set/Hook:
Are you ready to show how
many sounds you can identify
in one minute?
Balance Literacy Component: Word Work/ Phonics
Objective(s):
Students will identify the letter based on the sound it makes.
Essential Question(s):
Can the students identify the appropriate letter based on a given sound?
Procedures:
Students will first be given a
capital letter circle and a
clothespin. The teacher will
not give out the index cards
yet.
The teacher will explain that
the students will be playing a
game. The students will take
turns where one student has
the circle and clothespin and
the other student holds the
index cards. The student
holding the index cards will
draw the first card and say
only the sound the letter
makes. The other student
must guess the letter by
putting the clothespin on the
appropriate letter. The goal is
to guess as many letters as
they can in one mintue. They
will then switch and which
ever student guesses the
most letters wins.
The teacher should first
model the activity for the
students but drawing a card
and saying the sound the
letter makes. The students
should raise their circle with
the clothespin showing which
letter they are guessing. The
teacher should assess how
much practice the students
