Depending on the area you work for as an editor, your day-to-


day tasks may include different vairty such as :

1. commissioning articles
2.
3. choosing which articles to publish
4. deciding how theyll be laid out for publishing
5. assessing work sent from freelance journalists, photographers and
illustrators
6. Youll work with sub-editors, designers, production staff
and printers to make sure publication deadlines are met.

On smaller titles you might help to write and sub-edit.

On larger titles you'll just have editor duties.


You may also look after other areas like budget control,
hiring staff and working with advertising and production
departments.

Work Patterns

If you work for a daily or weekly publication youll usually work


irregular hours, including evenings and weekends.

If you work for a monthly publication or a specialist trade


journal, youll usually work normal office hours, but with some
overtime leading up to publication deadlines.

Your work will be mainly office-based. You may need to travel to


meet clients and reporters.

Qualifcations

E.g. UWE Bristol

GCSE: For all applicants, Grade C or above, or Grade 4 under newly


reformed GCSE grading, in English Language, or equivalent. Please
note the University does not accept Level 2 Key Skills, Functional
Skills or Certificates in Adult Numeracy and Literacy as suitable
alternatives to GCSEs.
A-level subjects: No specific subjects required. Points from A-Level
General Studies and AS-Level subjects (not taken onto full A-Level)
can be included towards overall tariff. You must have a minimum of
two A-Levels.
Relevant subjects: Humanities, Media, English, Social Sciences.
EDEXCEL (BTEC) Diploma: No specific subjects required.
Access: Achievement of the Access to HE Diploma; to include 15 level
3 credits at merit.
Baccalaureate IB: No specific subjects required.
Youll need a background in journalism and usually have
relevant qualifcations and work experience.
You could build up your publishing experience by starting as a
reporter or journalist.
