Jackies courage and moral objection to segregation were precursors to the impact would

have in major league baseball. After his discharge from the army in 1944, robinson began to play

baseball professionally. At the time the sport was segregated, and african americans and whites

played in seperate leagues. Branch rickery, president of the brooklyn dogers, in 1946 has chosen

him to help integrate major league baseball. He then moved to florida to begin spring training

with the royals.

Despite the racial abuse, partically at away games, robinson had an outstanding start with

the royals, leading the international league with a .349 batting average and .985 fielding

percentage. His successful year led to his promotion to join the dodgers. Robinson played his

Jackie robinson was arrested and court-martialed during training in the army for refusing

to move to the back of the segregated bus. He has opened the door for many others and will

forever be appreciated for his contribution to the game. Jackie honors himself and family with

honor and grace. The raw statistics only scratch the surface in evaluating jackie robinson as a

baseball player. He did not play first big league game until he was 28 years old.

But in what would be considered in his prime years, ages 28 to 34, robinson hit .319 and

averaged more than 110 runs scored per season. The right-handed robinson crowded the plate

and dared opposing hustlers to dust him off. He was an excellent bunter, good at the sacrifice and

always a threat to lay one down for a hit. Not known as a home-run hitter, he displayed his

versatility by playing regulary at first base, at third base, and in left field when the needs of the

team dictated it.

Jackie made up for an average arm by standing his ground on double plays and getting rid

of the ball quickly. The impact that robinson made on major league baseball is one that will

always be remembered. Every team in the majors celebrates jackie robinson day in honor of

when he truly broke the color barrier in baseball.
