This Data was collected as a result of polling which took place after the small

group breakout session at Intersections: Aligning Agriculture,


Nutrition, Health, and Economic Development on January 9, 2017.
1 of 3 questions were placed at each of the 15 tables. Attendees were given
the option to pick 2 of the questions in which to participate in a facilitated
discussion. Approximately 6 individuals including 1 facilitator were present at
each table. They were given 10 minutes to discuss the question and 5
minutes to decide, as a group, which answers they felt were most relevant
and impactful. Then, the most popular answers were collected on a polling
software which gave all attendees the ability to vote on their favorite
responses. The data is listed below.

What role could the healthcare system play in the work
to build healthy food systems?
Short Term Opportunities:
Introducing locally grown food into schools. Farm to School (14%)
Education of healthcare professionals & medical students on role of
nutrition and local producers through farmers markets, store tours,
day with the dietician, etc. (12%)
Connect the community with tools and information to notify
legislators of potential policy change or addition concerning health
care. (7%)
Research showing benefits of healthy lifestyle. (3%)
Long Term Opportunities:
Introducing locally grown food into hospitals & patients lives.

What support do we need from policy makers, economic
development professionals, and institutional leaders?
Short Term Opportunities:
Economic incentives for supermarkets to sell local foods and to help
cover losses. (14%)
Keep policy makers in the know, the time is now to talk about
relevant issues (10%)
Address issues as multifaceted issues, not just economic
development, nutrition, etc.. (8%)
Team partnerships include everyone who is essential to move the
conversation forward. Reach out to professionals who are open-
minded to diverse ideas. (7%)
Plan for alignment, opportunity and implementation. (5%)
Provide public forum for collective impact. (4%)
Long Term Opportunities:
Student loan forgiveness for graduates going into farming. (20%)
Policy shift to recognize internet access as a human right with policy
change to mandate internet providers offer services throughout
entire country. Recognize the difficulty of getting into and out of rural
areas. (14%)
Educate about what you can do through nonprofit lobbying,
advocacy, and citizen education. How to access reps and create
opportunities to facilitate better understanding. (12%)State of TN
