Key Vocabulary

Symposium- a conference or meeting to discuss a particular subject.

Infrastructure- the basic physical and organizational structures and facilities needed for

the operation of a society or enterprise.

Hobbyist- a person who pursues a particular hobby.

FAA- Federal Aviation Administration

Summary

A. Almost 800,000 drone registrations have been filed in the past 15 months and thats a

100,000 increase in the past three months. The FAA said that it projects drone usage to continue

to soar. "We're ushering in a new age of American aviation: the unmanned aircraft era. And it's

moving at a quicker pace than anything we've seen before," Michael Huerta said at the FAA

Unmanned Aircraft Systems Symposium.

B. In 2015 FAA made it mandatory for all owners to register their drowns under them

(FAA). Hobbyist receive just one ID number and doesnt matter how many drones they own. On
the other side commercial users and other professional drone users are required to register each

drone separately. FAA estimated that small hobbyist drones will triple to 3.55 million in 2021 in

the United States.

C. It also speaks of how commercial companies such as UPS are testing using autonomous

drones to make deliveries easier rural areas. Not only has UPS tested drone delivery Amazon has

also joined the project. But we shouldnt expect autonomous drone delivery soon because it is

not legal in the U.S.

My Opinion

I agree with the FAA on making drone flying secure because as they say we dont

want drones flying around sensitive sites. Also, I believe that it is not fair

for each commercial drone to be registered and hobbyist owning almost a dozen

drones and flying the carelessly sometimes. On social media droning, has blown

up for example YouTube, youtubers fly drones in a lot of videos and I have

personally seen them do dumb stuff and their drone is not registered. Creating a new Aviation

Rulemaking Committee is the right step into keeping our skies safe from reckless people and it

also is safer for drone enthusiast to enjoy their hobby while being safe.

Relation to Historical Event

Link: https://goo.gl/pG8hNm

This article speaks about the invention of the first computer which was called ENIAC which

costed 5,000 and weighed 30 tons. This is related to the topic because just like the drone article it
speaks about how technology continues advance and we are in a era of innovation. In 1970s we

had computers that could barely do anything and know he have autonomous flying computers

(which are drones) our world of technology has advanced dramatically in only 40 years.

Although these articles are similar they do have some differences the article about the PC speaks

more of computer system more than other technology such as drones, but they still revolve in the

field of computer advancements.

Relation to Sub Theme

This article is related to the science and technology sub theme because it speaks about how

technology is growing fast and that we cant let little things such as unlicensed drones to be in

our skies. Also commercial companies are now experimenting drone delivery; this may seem like

nothing big but it really can be because one day we may not see UPS men with their smiles

delivering at our doorstep instead we will see drones everywhere. Eventually it wont be just

drones it may be our whole world being run by technology.

Questions about the event

Does the FAA expect autonomous drone delivery to legalized in the near future?

How many issues has the U.S had with drones accessing sensitive sites?

Are there any countries where autonomous drone delivery is legal? If so have they

already started shipping packages with their drones?

I know that these drones are meant to help in rural areas but if it's easier then they would

need less workers. If the autonomous drone delivery law is passed will drones take some of the

employees jobs?
