Release Notes Programming Passenger Cars, ISTA 4.04.1x of 21
1 General notes
With the launch of ISTA 4, the functionality for programming has been integrated in ISTA.
E Series
F, G and I Series
The Release Notes list all known faults and faults that are currently still unresolved, with possible
workarounds which are important for the Retailer Organisation. Please contact Technical Support if
additional faults occur on the vehicle. In particular in the following cases:
With ISTA 4, it is now also possible to send feedback relating to vehicle programming to BMW AG. Selecting
the "Feedback" symbol (envelope symbol) displays the feedback screen with input boxes.

3 Innovations
The following interesting innovations are included, amongst others.
Benefit: To protect against theft, the Head Unit (HU-H2) of the specified vehicles with production date as of
November 2016 is coupled to the Body Domain Controller (BDC).
Vehicles: G11, G12, G30, F15, F16, F85, F86, F54, F60 as of 11/16 can be dealt with
Notes:
For the installation of a HU-H2 new part, the locking is performed automatically by ISTA 4 or ISTA/P.
In the following cases the component protection must be activated in order that the navigation function works
properly:
In the case of a BDC exchange the lock must be performed by Technical Support.
Benefit: Running multiple programming or diagnosis sessions on one device, similarly to ISTA/P.
Benefit: Update of the map data by ISTA 4 in motor vehicles with navigation system.
Planned for ISTA 4.05.1x. Up to then, the update can be performed with ISTA/P.

ISTA/P (BN2000)
Benefit: For certain series it is possible to perform the software update without infotainment control units.
After the start of the session a dialogue appears with the selection of the desired programming mode:
2. Partial programming - all except the infotainment control units are updated.
In the case of partial programming, all control units that are not updated are marked with a grey dot in the
control unit tree.

Vehicles:
R55, R56, R57, R58, R59, R60, R61, E81, E82, E84, E87, E88, E89, E90, E91, E92, E93 - worldwide
E70, E71 without M Sport vehicles and without KAFAS - initially in Germany only
E60, E61, E63, E64 without M Sport vehicles and without ACC or LDM - initially in Germany only
Notes:
If partial programming is selected, not all conversions and retrofittings may be selectable because they
concern infotainment control units.
Fault description:
At the start of the ISTA/P session an execution stop occurs with a reference to the Release Notes.

Fault description:
Navigation system and voice processing system without function, all enabling codes are deactivated.
Measure/workaround:
ISTA 4.04.2x
ISTA/P 3.61.1
Affected application:
ISTA 4
ISTA/P
Note:
For new vehicles from the production period February to March 2017, the fault memory 0xB7F87D
(component protection not initialized) can be ignored.
Until availability of ISTA/P 3.61.1 or ISTA 4.04.2x, the component protection should not be activated via
ISTA.

Fault description:
If the fault memory entry with code 0xB7F33C is present in the control unit ATM-01, then the control unit is
faulty.

Fault description:
The cause is the switch-off of terminal 15 by the BDC control unit after its programming.
Measure/workaround:
The control units to be encoded are automatically planned-in during the continuation of the session.

Fault description:
If the insertion sequence of the ICOM is not observed, or the ICOM connection of WLAN to LAN cable is
changed, the measures plan can sporadically not be calculated.
All F, G, I Series
Measure/workaround:
2. Switch on ignition.
3. Wait two to three minutes, to allow each control unit time to start
4. Attach ICOM
5. Start programming
Note: Please also observe the described sequence for changing the connection from WLAN to LAN cable.

Important!
During vehicle management with ISTA/P an incorrect pop-up with notice of an invalid IP address
can appear. If an incorrect pop-up is displayed, it can be ignored and the session may be
continued.

Important!
In individual cases, installed security software (antivirus software or firewall) causes programming
aborts of different head units.
Measure/workaround:
For more details, see Dealer Self Support entry 50714 and 57231.

4.8 Vehicle order import fails due to antivirus software and firewall
Important!
In individual cases, the vehicle order-import fails because of installed security software (antivirus
software or firewall). After the start of the session, the vehicle identification with ISTA/P fails.
(BMW internal sites are not affected by the fault)
Measure/workaround:
For more details, see ISPI Dealer Self Support entry 51219.
Affected application:
ISTA/P

Fault description:
During vehicle management, one of the following Ethernet-capable control units should be programmed:HU-
H, RSE, ATM, KOMBI, ACC, ICAM, KAFAS
At the start of the session, a note appears indicating that the IP address is invalid. The Ethernet
programming can fail if the following steps are not followed:
All F, G, I Series
Measure/workaround:
4. If the fault message continues to appear: Check that the Ethernet wiring in the vehicle corresponds to
the wiring diagram in ISTA
