Aim/purpose of the project

In this project, we will be developing a light, efficient and accurate algorithm that
can be used to detect instances of people falling down (generally elderly people).
To make the entire system portable, we have used the popular Raspberry Pi
microcontroller, which runs the algorithm for fall detection and alerts a
predefined contact on detecting a fall.

We will also be comparing the algorithm we have developed with various other
attempts at addressing the same problem. We will be using characteristics and
performance heuristics to provide a detailed analysis of the various cases that
this system can be applied in.

Introduction and related work

Falls are a major health risk that diminish the quality of life among elderly
people. With the elderly population surging, especially with aging baby
boomers, fall detection becomes increasingly important. However, existing
commercial products and academic solutions struggle to achieve pervasive fall
detection. In this paper, we propose utilizing the Raspberry Pi microcontroller as
a platform for pervasive fall detection system development. To our knowledge,
we are the first to do so. We propose PiFallD, a pervasive fall detection system
implemented on the Raspberry Pi B+. We implement a prototype system and
conduct experiments to evaluate our system. In particular, we compare PiFallDs
performance with that of existing work(PerFallD) and a commercial product.
