Course Description:

Management is relevant to every person in business and this course will take a look at different
leadership techniques and styles. Discussions throughout the term will include the topics of
good leadership, motivating employees, effective management systems, and clearly
communicating company ideas. Managers need to think about, decide on, and put into action
major long term plans and we will look at this in detail. This course will include management
decisions such as whether to buy another business, enter a new market, or develop new
technology. We will also look at and discuss important business leaders and how they became
visionaries in their respective fields.

Course Objectives:

1. Define and explain the importance and functions of management.


2. Explain the roles of leaders and managers within businesses
3. Discuss the qualities of a good leader and the different leadership styles that exist.
4. Explore the nature of emotional intelligence and discuss how this relates to Golemans
four competencies.
5. Learn about the nature and importance of motivation as a management tool including the
needs of employees while at work.
6. Discuss theories of motivation that can be applied in the workplace to get the most out of
your employees.
7. Understand the practical methods of motivation used by businesses in the financial and
non-financial fields.
8. Explore the purpose and roles of human resource management and how businesses recruit
and select employees.
9. Learn how to properly use key employment documents including job advertisements, job
descriptions, and employment contracts.
10. Discuss the ways in which businesses discipline employees, make them redundant, and
dismiss them.
11. Discuss the purpose, methods, and importance of training employees.
12. Learn how to handle issues affecting staff morale and welfare.
