FY14 RWDC State UAS Challenge: Precision Agriculture - Work Flow
Step
hase I - Conceptual Design
Research the mission and the constraints you must operate within
Research types of Air Vehicle Element (UAV) airframe configurations, brainstorm overall system conce
several favorites
Consider and identify the most appropriate engineering design strategy to support this scenario (e.g.,
prototyping, evolutionary, concurrent development, etc.)
Determine individual team member roles in project (e.g., program manager, design coordinator, syste
engineer, etc)
Select or identify one or more candidate sensor payloads and determine dependencies (i.e., operation
requirements and limitations)
Identify an overview theory of operation (i.e., describe how you expect the overall design to work in re
mission planning, briefing, launch, execution, recovery, and debrief). Think through how your UAS wou
mission/task.
Identify your baseline requirements: a) What the system must be capable of (e.g., operational speed,
range); b) What parameters must be met (i.e., assumptions and design variables); and c) constrains o
that may reduce the effectiveness or applicability of some options
Repeat this process until you have several candidate systems you like
hase II - Preliminary Design
Select your Air Vehicle Element airframe configuration (e.g., fixed-wing, rotary-wing, multirotor, or h
Size the aircraft so that it is large enough to carry the payload (the payload is recommended to be app
10-20% of your aircraft gross weight as a starting point)
Select the flight controls for the Air Vehicle Element
Select the powerplant (propulsion) for the Air Vehicle Element
Select the onboard sensors (non-payload) for the Air Vehicle Element
Using provided CAD models, place the major components in your aircraft fuselage to make sure there
Conduct a preliminary performance analysis to make sure your design is basically viable
Given the endurance estimate from the previous step, estimate how long it would take for your Air Ve
Element (or multiple UAVs) to completely cover the focus area (i.e. Corn crop)
Identify user interface (i.e., ground control) type and format (e.g., handheld, portable, trailerable, fixed
Identify capture, storage/transmission method for sensor (payload) data (e.g., locally stored or transm
Re-examine theory of operation and update either theory or design, as necessary (e.g., how does it re
FAA regulations or known component limitations/dependencies?)
Consider choices you could make to improve system performance or decrease cost. Repeat Phases I a
are satisfied that you have a strong candidate
hase III - Detailed Design
Identify your selections for all required components necessary for your UAS: a) Sensor (Payload); b) Ai
Element (UAV); c) Command, Control, and Communication (C3) Element; d) Support Equipment Eleme

Adjust the size of your Air Vehicle Element accordingly and attached requisite components to airfra
Check that the wing satisfies the structural criteria at the maximum weight (+6/-4 g's)
Produce CL vs. , CD vs. , and CM vs. data for the Air Vehicle Element(s)
Re-examine theory of operation and update either theory or design, as necessary (e.g., how does it re
FAA regulations or known component limitations/dependencies?)
Consider choices you could make to improve system performance or decrease cost. Consider impleme
and repeating Phase I, II, and/or III.
etailed Mission Planning
Lay out your mission by phase
Develop the route(s) that your UAV(s) will follow when capturing data from the focus area (i.e. Corn cr
for the limitations of your UAV performance characteristics such as: turning radius, sensor payload cha
and aircraft speed. Illustrate your routes and confirm full search area coverage using an appropriately
of the search area.
Determine communication range and line of sight requirements
Determine the operational personnel requirements for your UAS to conduct a mission
Calculate the cost to assemble and operate the system
Calculate the objective function
Based on what you've learned, consider design or system concept changes that you could implement
your system performance or reduce cost, and implement those changes if appropriate
etailed Financial Calculations
Calculate the initial system cost.
Calculate the direct operational cost per mission.
Amortize the cost over 50 missions and calculate the objective function.
Assess the competitiveness of your system at your cost. Consider scope for improvement.
