Thenamecomesfromblockingchokinghighfrequencies
whilepassinglowfrequencies.Itisafunctionalnamethename
chokeisusedifaninductorisusedforblockingordecoupling
higherfrequencies,butissimplycalledaninductorifusedin
electronicfiltersortunedcircuits.Inductorsdesignedforuseas
chokesareusuallydistinguishedbynothavingthelowloss
construction(highQfactor)requiredininductorsusedintuned
circuitsandfilteringapplications.

Audiofrequencychokes
Audiofrequencychokes(AFC)usuallyhaveferromagneticcoresto
increasetheirinductance.Theyareoftenconstructedsimilarlyto
transformers,withlaminatedironcoresandanairgap.Amajoruse
inthepastwasinpowerrectifiersanddirectcurrentmotor
controllerstoproducedirectcurrent(DC),wheretheywereusedin
conjunctionwithlargeelectrolyticcapacitorstoremovethevoltage
ripple(AC)attheoutputDC.Arectifiercircuitdesignedfora
chokeoutputfiltermayproducetoomuchDCoutputvoltageand

whileblockingcommonmodecurrents.[2]Magneticfieldsproducedbydifferentialmodecurrentsinthe
windingstendtocanceleachotherout.Thus,thechokepresentslittleinductanceorimpedanceto
differentialmodecurrents.Thisalsomeansthecorewillnotsaturateevenforlargedifferentialmode
currentsandthemaximumcurrentratingisinsteaddeterminedbytheheatingeffectofthewinding
resistance.Commonmodecurrents,however,seeahighimpedanceduetothecombinedinductanceofthe
windings.
