Assessment Sample: Quiz

Module Topic 3: Role of values in leadership

Terminal Objective: Create a personalized values-based leadership creed

Enabling Objective: Categorize acts of leadership on a Blake& Mouton Leadership

Grid

As we have discovered in this module, leadership according to Blake & Mouton can
be classified along 2 axes: a concern for task and a concern for people. Dependent
upon where an act of leadership is positioned along each of these axes will, in turn,
determine the quadrant style of leadership that is being most exhibited.

This week I am going to have you take a quiz based on Blake and Moutons theory.
You will be presented with several brief leadership scenarios and be asked to plot
them on the grid. But, there is a unique twist to the quiz...I am going to enlist you,
the students, in the co-creation of it!

By Wednesday, I will require from each of you a brief leadership scenario that can
be used for the quiz. The scenario needs to be no more than 6 sentences long and
needs to contain the following elements:

A context
Enough description to be able to make an educated attempt at grid-plotting
An answer

Below is an example scenario that I have created to help guide your thinking:

Example Scenario:

Rick has spent the last 5 years as principal of a high school situated in a well-
established neighborhood that has a very stable student body demographically.
Prior to Ricks arrival the school enjoyed a stellar reputation as an academic and
extracurricular powerhouse. But, under Ricks tenure the school has seen a steady
and precipitous decline in academic results. This is coupled by the schools growing
reputation in the community as being poorly managed, poorly disciplined, and poor
in student spirit and parental support. None of this seems to bother Rick. Amongst
his staff, however, Rick is highly regarded for staying out the way, and rewarding
them handsomely with generous professional development accounts, entertaining
staff parties that build a strong sense of collegiality, and running interference for
teachers whenever they are attacked or criticized.

Answer: Country Club Manager

As you contemplate the possibilities in developing your scenario feel free to draw on
actual historical examples locally, regionally, nationally or even internationally.
Similarly, feel free to derive examples from your own workplaces or other
organizations you may be involved with. Finally, you are also at liberty to invent
entirely fictitious examples. The only caution, regardless of what you use for
inspiration, is that no real-life identities of any private individuals are revealed so
that anonymity is assured.

As a final comment, please note that as the instructor, I reserve the right to edit and
modify your quiz questions to ensure their suitability and alignment with the
objectives of the module. Please do not misconstrue any such modifications I may
make as an admonition of your efforts, which are all very appreciated.

I look forward to your scenarios!
