TYWLS Course Outline for Parents 2016-2017

Course Name: 8th Grade Mathematics Department: Mathematics


Prerequisite: 7th Grade Math Date: September 2016
Teacher: Ms. Li
All courses assess student performance based on the TYWLS School-Wide Grading Policy for grades 6-12

Course Description: The course uses Connected Mathematics Project 3 (CMP3). There are textbooks that go
through investigations. Students will learn through guided problems and inquiry thinking. Before each unit,
there will be a unit readiness that will assess students prior knowledge. As we explore each unit, there will be
assessments such as check-up quiz, performance task, unit assessment and math reflections to assess students
knowledge and progress. There are six units in 8th Grade.

Unit 1: Thinking With Mathematical Models: Linear and nonlinear functions based on experiments and data
Unit 2: Growing, Growing, Growing: Exponential growth and decay functions
Unit 3: Butterflies, Pinwheels, and Wallpaper: Understanding of congruence and similarity of geometric figures
Unit 4: Say it With Symbols: Using symbolic expressions to represent and reason about relationships
Unit 5: Its In the System: Systems of equations and inequalities with two variables
Unit 6: Looking for Pythagoras: Pythagorean Theorem

Different textbooks for each unit (Do not write in the books)
Scientific calculators
Graph papers
Protractor
Internet Access to Edmodo, DeltaMath, Pupilpath

Assessment: New York State Assessment (May 2, 3, and 4)

Project-based Learning Opportunities: At the conclusion of each unit, there will be a project and/or an end of
the unit assessment that will summarize and apply all math skills learned.

Extra Help: I will be available for tutoring during select periods of your daughters lunch period, afternoon
school on Tuesday afternoons, as well as for enrichment opportunities upon request.
