1.
Reaction Predictions:
Copper Sulfate Iron Nitrate
Iron Will react XXXX
Aluminum Will react Will react
Copper XXXX Will not react
Magnesium Will react Will react
Looking at each metal before mixing them with the solutions, some of them had distinct
differences. The iron was the hardest silver metal, and it also had the darkest silver color.
The aluminum was the shiniest with a silver color, and it looked very light and beaten up
on the sides. The copper, which easily stood out, was the only orange, wired metal. And
last, the magnesium was very malleable and somewhat shiny.
Reactions that Occurred:
Copper Sulfate Iron Nitrate
Iron Turns orange, clear flakes XXXX
Aluminum Clear solid flaking, some Nothing occurred
bubble
Copper XXXX Nothing occurred
Magnesium Black solid flaking, gas Bubbles forming, gas formed,
formed, rapidly moving orange rust
bubbles
Reactions that Occurred:
Fe + CuSO4 --> FeSO4 + Cu
2Al + 3CuSO4 --> AlSO4 + 3Cu *all reactions are single replacement reactions
Mg + CuSO4 --> MgSO4 + Cu **only reaction that did not occur and was
Mg + Fe(NO3)2 --> Mg(NO3)2 + Fe predicted was aluminum and iron nitrate.
A synthesis reaction occurred at this station: 2Cu(II) (s)+O2 (g) --------> 2Cu(II)O (s)
We could tell a chemical reaction occurred because gas was formed in the test tube.
A decomposition reaction occurred at this station: 2NaHCo3 (s) -------> Na2 CO3 (s) +
H2O (l) + CO2 (g)
4. -Appearance of borax: grainy, white colored powder, salt-like
-Appearance of glue: thick, white, sticky paste
-Borax dissolved into water to make borax/water solution
-Glue mixed with water to make glue/water solution
-Upon pouring the borax/water solution into the glue/water solution, a white, solid, slime like
substance was formed
A synthesis reaction occurred at this station: Borax (aq) combined with glue (aq) yields to a thick,
slime like substance (s).
