Parents’ Info Update

Dear Parents:

OUTBREAK OF HAND, FOOT AND MOUTH DISEASE (HFMD)

Further to the SMS we sent urgently to you on Sunday, 4 July 2010, we have
stepped up our vigilant health checks and cleanliness immediately. We informed
you of a confirmed HFMC case that day.

We increased the hands, feet and mouth/body checks on the children upon
arrival, at noon, after afternoon tea and at departure . So far this week, we have
referred parents of three children to seek medical attention/confirmation,
after a thorough health checks. We regret to inform you that out of these, two
more have been confirmed with HFMD (on Monday 5 July and Wednesday, 8
July). These three children, confirmed infected with HFMD, will stay out of
school until they recover, and/or certified medically fit to return to school (by
their medical doctors).

We have informed MCYS (Ministry of Community Development, Youth and

Sports) and MOH (Ministry of Health) of these three confirmed HFMD cases
and they are looking into the situation closely. This is the first infectious
disease outbreak in our school since we started operation in January 2005. We
have always been vigilant and abide to MCYS and MOH guidelines to good health
and hygiene practices (infection control measures). In fact, the parents of the
first confirmed HFMD case believed that their child contracted the disease
elsewhere and not from our school.

MCYS informed us that the number of cases is on the rise with some 607
children from 90 child care centres being affected as of 24 June 2010.

Responding to MCYS’ alert and foremost, reacting on the first confirmed HFMD
case in our school, the staff and teachers came very early on Monday 5 July
2010 to start clean, wash and sanitise everything in school.

Everything include all toys, musical instruments, teaching aids, books, cubby,
trays, displayed materials, containers, paint bottles, tables, chairs, rugs,
cushions, sofas, shoes, ponchos, repellant/sun block bottles and mats. We will
consistently and continuo usly clean, wash and sanitise all these including indoor
/ outdoor play equipments. We even increased the frequency of those we wash
or sanitise daily, like bowls, spoons, cups, mattresses, toilets.

We will continue our efforts to stop this HFMD infection, but we need your help.
We seek your utmost support and co -operation to aid our efforts. Please refer
to MCYS’ Letter to Parents (see attachment) and follow their recommendations.

Parents’ Info Update

We also would like to remind you to seek immediate medical attention whenever
your child is unwell. Please allow him/her to rest at home until certified
medically fit to go back to school. This will not only prevent disease spread but
also safeguard the unwell child as he/she is likely to be more susceptible to
acquiring another infection.

We have previously shared with you (refer to previous Trumpets GT1004 – April
2010 issue), Health Promotion Board (HPB) Proper Hand Washing Procedure. We,
teachers and children, refer to it as the “8 steps Hand Washing” in school. Once
again, we provide the link
http://www.hpb.gov.sg/infectiousdiseases/article.aspx?id=5652 for your easy
reference and follow up. Please keep up with the good hygiene practices at
home.

We also provide links for you to learn more about HFMD and the precautions you
can take at home (to break the transmissions) -

http://www.cdc.gov/Features/HandFootMouthDisease/
http://www.hpb.gov.sg/diseases/article.aspx?id=792

We want to stop the chain of the HFMD infection and trust you will continue to
support our efforts at providing a clean and safe child care environment for
each and every child in our school!

We will keep you posted on the number of infections regularly via SMS or email.

CHILDREN ARE OUR SHARED RESPONSIBILITY –

LET’S PLAY YOUR PART TO PROTECT THEM!

Library Visits:
We also stated the dates of our library visits in the Calendar of Events &
Themes for 2010. However, in view of the HFMD outbreak, we have to postpone
our Library Visit 9 to conduct more cleaning, washing and sanitising. Thus, the
Library Visits for Term 3 will be on the following dates:

- 14 July, 21 July, 4 August and 25 August

If your child is in the morning half-day programme, do know that we would be

glad to have him/her join us for these visits as well. He/She may stay in the
school’s premises until all are ready to leave for the library.

Please sign the consent form attached to this Trumpets to approve or

disapprove your child from visiting the library with us.

“Live” Swimming Lessons

The “live” swimming lessons for Term 3 have also been postponed due to both
bad weather and HFMD outbreak. You may meet Ivan, the external certified
swimming instructor, to discuss your child’s expected swimming progress, his
lesson plans, instructions, or see the lessons being conducted yourself between
11.45am to 12.30pm at Yishun Swimming Complex.

Further to our mass PTM on Thursday, 27 May 2010 and our P1

Integration and Support Programmes (ISP), the “live” swimming lessons
are compulsory for our Kindergarten 2 children. We managed to get the
fee reduced and payable monthly. Thus, we look forward to have your full
support to our P1 ISP activities.
