2. SOFTWARE INSTALLATION
The KEPserver DDE software needs to be installed on a Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows NT
personal computer. The PC should have a minimum of 32MB of RAM memory, an available Serial
Port, and Microsoft Excel 97 installed. The KEPserver DDE software will be licensed for use on a
single PC. Only one PC can utilize the software for each version that is purchased.
The KEPserver DDE software is installed by placing Disk #1 in Drive A. Go to Start/Run and select
Setup.exe in Drive A. This program will be installed in the C:\Program Files\KEPware subdirectory.
You will be prompted to remove the first diskette and insert the next diskette to continue the
installation procedure. When prompted place a check in the Modem Option box.
The KEPserver Modem Option is installed next. Follow the same procedure in the previous step
using Setup.exe on the Modem Option diskette to continue the installation.
The Idec Driver diskette is installed next. Follow the same procedure in the previous step using
Setup.exe on the Idec Driver diskette to continue the installation.
The KEPserver DDE configuration files are installed next. Using Windows Explorer copy the files
on the KEPserver DDE Configuration diskette to the following subdirectory, C:\Program
Files\Kepware\Kepdde\Projects.
The Microsoft Excel 97 files on the KEPserver DDE Spreadsheet diskette can be installed in a
subdirectory of your choosing. We will use C:\My Documents\Kep as the default subdirectory as
referenced in this manual. Use Windows Explorer to copy these files to the appropriate subdirectory.
Start the KEPserver DDE software by double clicking on the KEPserver icon that was placed on the
desktop. A series of 2 numbers will appear. To register the software these numbers need to be given
to the technical support department at KEPware. These numbers match the KEPware software to the
computers BIOS and Hard Disk Drive. A software registration number will be assigned by
KEPware to register their software for the PC it is installed on. KEPware uses this method of
registering their software, which is more favorable than a hardware key or dongle connected to the
computers parallel port, which is the method used by many other industrial software firms.
3. HARDWARE CONFIGURATION
Host PC Modem
An external modem needs to be connected to the computers serial port, COM 1. The modem is
configured by Hyland Automation Controls, Inc. for use with the KEPserver DDE software and the
remote Idec FA-2J Programmable Controller. The Part Number for this modem is PFA-96-HOST-A.
An internal modem may be used if the user accepts all responsibilities for configuring the modems
initialization string. Many modems that claim compatibility with each other have minute differences
that can be difficult and time consuming to determine. The host modem, PFA-96-HOST-A is
programmed with the following initialization string:
AT &F E0 N1 Q0 V1 &C0 &D0 &K0 &Q6 \N0 &W0 &W1
The spaces between the modem commands are not necessary.
Page 3
Modem Programming
The initialization string for both modems is included on the diskettes provided. These can be copied
to the appropriate subdirectory such as C:\Modem on the PC. These are written as batch files
that run under MS-DOS and utilize COM 1 to program the modem. It may be easier to create a
shortcut and place these batch files on the desktop to program the modems.
The Zoom modems can also be programmed using HyperTerminal which is included as part of
Windows. Go to Start/Programs/Accessories/HyperTerminal/hyperterminal.exe. This needs to be
setup for Direct Connect to COM 1, 9600 Baud, 8 Data Bits, 1 Stop Bit, and No Parity. The AT
modem configuration commands can be typed directly in HyperTerminal. Be sure that the AT
command starts each line of modem commands. Each initialization string cannot exceed 40
characters. To upload the present modem configuration type: AT&V
This will display the Active Profile and the two Stored Profiles, 0 and 1. All three of these
configurations should match.
The remote modem is setup to automatically answer an incoming call on the first ring. A dedicated
phone line is required to enable phone calls to be received by the modem. Two RJ-11 Phone Jacks
are provided on the modems to allow an extension telephone to utilize the same line if necessary.
The FA-2J PLC will not initiate any phone calls. If any toll calls are made on the line it is from
personnel using the same line.

KEPserver
The KEPserver needs to be started first. Double click the KEPserver icon on the desktop and select
File/Open. Highlight the appropriate selection such as, COM1_Idec_DialModem and open the file.
Press the Green Icon or Mode/On-Line to activate the KEPserver DDE program. The Excel 97
spreadsheets access the Idec PLC through this internal Windows connection. After going on line
minimize KEPserver by pressing the - sign in the upper right corner of the open window. The
program will now appear on the bottom of the screen in the Windows Taskbar. The necessary Excel
97 spreadsheets can now be opened.
Macros have been programmed in Excel 97 to load the desired phone number. Find the alpha
character that corresponds to the desired phone number and site location and press that character on
the keyboard while holding down the CTRL and SHIFT keys with the other hand. After the phone
number loads in cell A,1 press, CTRL SHIFT D, to begin dialing. The KEPserver program must be
running in the background and be minimized for these macros to work. When finished press, CTRL
SHIFT H to hangup the modems.
If additional phone numbers are required then go to File/Save As and select another filename such as
Dialer 2 to copy the Dialer spreadsheet to another file on the computer.
Modem communications can be extremely slow. This spreadsheet may take a minute or two to
update all fields. The computer should have a minimum of 32MB of RAM Memory to load multiple
Excel spreadsheets. After a change is made it may take as long to see it change within the program.
Macros have been programmed into Excel 97 to change Setpoints, Force Outputs, reset the Elapsed
Hour Meters, or reset the Alarm Counters. Column B in the spreadsheet is the present status of
Setpoints for Temperature, Humidity, Inputs and Outputs. DO NOT ENTER ANY VALUES IN
COLUMN B. Entering the desired value in Column C does all Setpoint and Output Forcing changes.
If changing a Temperature or Humidity Setpoint replace the Column C value with the desired one and
press CTRL SHIFT W to write the Setpoint changes into the PLC. Column B will update with the
new changes in a minute or two.
Output Forcing
To Force Outputs go to the Output Forcing section in Column A of the spreadsheet after the
Temperature and Humidity section. Output Forcing Mode can be activated for one hour. Place a 1
in the Column C field to Start Output Forcing and a 0 in the Stop Output Forcing. Place a 1 in
any Load/Alarm that is not presently on to force it on. Press CTRL SHIFT F to activate output
forcing. Additional Loads/Alarms can be forced on by placing a 1 in the respective Column C cell
and pressing CTRL SHIFT F. To disable a Load/Alarm from output forcing return the respective
Column C cell to 0 (zero) and press CTRL SHIFT F. To disable all output forcing return the
Output Forcing Start cell to 0, all Loads/Alarm cells to 0, enter a 1 in the Stop Output Forcing cell,
and press CTRL SHIFT F. The Stop Output Forcing Cell should be returned to 0 and CTRL SHIFT
F pressed again. Care should be exercised when using Output Forcing. The main electrical service
may not be sized to allow all loads to energize at once. The Heat and A/C should never be on
together but could be done using Output Forcing. If certain loads such as the A/C are forced on and
do not energize it may be due to their minimum off timer. The PLC protects the A/C compressors
from short cycling with a minimum off timer for each. If an A/C has not been deenergized long
enough then it can not turn on until the internal PLC timer times out.
Alarm Counters
To reset the Alarm Counters go to Column G in the Output Section. Place a 1 in the respective cell
and press, CTRL SHIFT C. This will reset the Alarm Counters for the respective load back to 0. The
cell in Column G should be returned to 0 and CTRL SHIFT C pressed again to return the cell to its
proper default value.
