boxes.)

This assignment has 4 questions, and it is worth 5% of the total assessment for the course.
(Marks per question are given; the total, worth 5%, is 15 marks.)

1. Let z = f (x, y) = x2 y 1/2 + .
x2 y
(a) (3 marks) Find the equation of the tangent plane to this surface at the point
(x, y) = (2, 1).
(b) (1 mark) Sketch the plane, using the triangle method (finding intercepts).

2. (3 marks) A hill H is given as a function of the map position (x, y) by the function

H(x, y) = 4x3 y + 2y 2 .

Find the slope of the hill in a South East direction at the point (2, 1) .

3. Find the following limits, if they exist, or else explain clearly why the limit is
non-existent.
2x2 y
(a) (1 12 marks) lim ;
(x,y)(0,0) x3 + 4y 3
x
(b) (1 mark) lim x2 y tan(y );
(x,y)(, 2 ) 2

x3 y 3
(c) (1 21 marks) lim .
(x,y)(1,1) xy

4. (4 marks) A solid rectangular block is one of a set of several, and forms part of
a stacking game. It should have base rectangle 2 cm by 4 cm, and height 3 cm.
There is a possible percentage error of 2% in these three measurements. What is
the maximum resulting error in the volume of one block?
