increasing need for materials that can survive and perform in
extreme subsea environments. 3M Glass Bubbles have proven
their reliability in adverse conditions, for applications such as
reducing weight and increasing uplift of buoyancy modules and for
enhancing thermal insulation properties in risers and pipelines.

Few polymers can survive the harsh conditions encountered in

off-shore drilling and production. Dyneon, a 3M subsidiary, has
a wide range of fluoropolymers and fluoroelastomers that can
operate in temperatures ranging from -40C to 260C and provide
outstanding chemical resistance to a variety of chemicals. One
example is Dyneon PVDF, an ideal material for tubing and piping

Well Stimulation
A variety of 3M technologies are being put to work to enhance
recovery and extend the useful life of wells in challenging and marginal
applications such as gas condensates, heavy oils and oil sands.

One such enabling technology is 3M Controlled Delivery Fracturing

Additive, which uses microencapsulation to deliver liquid breaker
chemical precisely where and when its needed without leaving
unwanted solids behind. Research is also underway to develop foaming
agents and other materials used in hydraulic fracturing.

Low Density Cementing

Improved production, less remediation, reduced formation
damage and better zonal isolation are just some of the advantages
3M Glass Bubbles offer over conventional density-reducing
materials such as nitrogen foam and cenospheres. In addition,
they are easier to use, and help you achieve more predictable,
consistent results.

Low Density Drilling Fluids

Drilling fluids/muds made with 3M Glass Bubbles, instead of by
aeration, are so predictable that at-balance or near-balanced drilling
can be used even in sensitive strata, without significant risk to the
formation. 3M glass bubbles provide an incompressible, single-
phase fluid one with simple, predictable hydraulics able to survive
downhole pressures as high as 18,000 psi. 3M glass bubbles are
non-volatile, stable additives that provide drilling muds with durable
low density properties, both during and after a drilling job. Muds
formulated with 3M glass bubbles can potentially be re-used on
multiple neighboring wells where low density drilling is required.
