KIIT was established in 1992 as a vocational training centre with only two staff and 12
students. However, it took shape as an institution only in 1997, when degree
engineering programme commenced. KIIT owes its existence to the vision of its founder
Prof. Achyuta Samanta who, with no land, limited finances (only Rs. 5000/-) and little
knowledge of higher education, determined to create a university for benefit of the
society. From these small beginnings, KIIT has developed into a leading university with a
strong interdisciplinary culture and a commitment to teaching excellence. Prof.
Samanta has also established Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS), a free
residential institute exclusively for 25,000 poorest of the poor tribal children and
youths only one of its kind in the whole world.

KIIT Green is a bold initiative of KIIT University to control environmental pollution and to create a healthy
ambience in and around 25 sq. km. area in which different campuses of KIIT are located. A mega plantation
has been done in which more than one lakh saplings were planted. The University has drawn ambitious plan
to make KIIT campus totally vehicle free. In the first phase, use of two wheelers, both by students and staffs,
has been prohibited, after putting in place an effective alternative transport arrangement. Besides mass
plantation and limiting vehicular pollution, other environmentally friendly initiatives under KIIT Green are
rain water harvesting and water management, sewerage treatment, biogas, solar energy, etc.

PUBLIC HEALTH
Health Care matters to some of us some of the time but public health is vital to all of us all the time.
(C. Everett Koop, Association of Schools of Public Health, 2008)

Public Health is defined as the art and science of preventing disease, prolonging life and promoting health
through the organized efforts of Society (Acheson E.D, 1988). While a doctor treats individuals after they fall
sick or injured, a public health practitioner protects and prevents people from getting sick or injured. KSPH (KIIT
School of Public Health) has been established with a mission to advance the public health through learning,
understanding, educating, discovery and communication. In order to work on this mission, the school is
engaged in producing knowledge through research, higher education, and translate knowledge into evidence
that can be communicated to the public, policy maker and practitioners to advance the health of population.

KSPH is engaged in various activities relating to Academics, Research and Service to the communities with its
local, national and international collaboration. The School's research priority areas are Health system
innovation, Environmental health, Geriatric health, Maternal and Child Health, Infectious & non-communicable
diseases, Global health and one health. It has set up a Center of Health System and Innovation which is
intended to be developed as a center of excellence. The School also carried out consultancy services and
advocacy with policy makers, using media and legal tools.
