Academy Cadet
Gay Elms Primary School

Merchants’ Academy has started
construction work on a purpose-built
Army Cadet Centre that will be home
to the UK’s first Academy Cadet Force.

The centre will be the first of its kind to


be attached to a state school, offering
the Academy the chance to run its own
cadet force as part of an existing
programme of co-curricular activities.
Students will be able to try their hand at
field craft and drill, whilst developing
their leadership and teamwork skills.

and the DCSF. The Cadet Centre
building, which is being erected on the
school site, will be fully equipped with
state-of-the-art facilities and is likely to
be completed in December this year.

We have been on lots of exciting trips like the Lifeskills Centre. We were put in
realistic scenarios and had to figure safe ways to get out of them. This has
taught us to deal with real life situations such as fires and traffic. In year 5 we

Soon we will be going to Barton Camp and as year 6s we stay there for the

We also have prom coming up, which we are very excited about, as we get to
wear dresses and suits. We meet at the Withywood Centre and ride in fire
truck limos to school where we eat dinner and then dance for the rest of the
night. Soon we have to go to secondary school. We are sad at leaving Gay

HEALTHY-EATING COURSES for anyone who has young children and


people with a diet-related illness will resume in September. These courses
are very popular so please BOOK EARLY. Phone Chris as below.
WANT ADVICE ABOUT YOUR DIET OR NUTRITION? This summer we
are beginning regular one-to-one advice sessions with a qualified dietician in
our Food Resource Centre. For further details ring Chris on the number
below.
THE FOOD RESOURCE CENTRE will be a new venture for us. We plan to have
a range of recipes, cookery books and nutritional information for you to access. It
is in a restful area behind the Food for All shop and in the future there may also b
some equipment, which can be borrowed. The area will also be available for use
by breast-feeding mothers.
THE HARTCLIFFE & WITHYWOOD AMBLERS will be out and about this
summer. Walks include Portland Bill, The Cotswold Way and a guided walk in
Clifton, as well as a couple of local walks. Please ring for a programme.

VOLUNTEERS WANTED: If you’ve ever fancied working in a garden or a shop


then how about volunteering with HHEAG or Food For All? No experience is
necessary, as we will help you get new skills. We promise the work is fun and the
company is good.
