Verso sharing and class discussion Purpose: for students to see others

work and learn from their ideas, in order to gain a deeper understanding of
what narrative conventions make up the Western genre.
1) Once the class has completed their collages, each member must
follow the link in the Weebly to join Verso and upload their collage. Verso
2) Verso page is projected; class discussion on common traits of student
collages.
3) Key questions to encourage thinking:
What settings are common to the collages?
What type of characters do you notice?
What examples of plot line are shown?
Are there any key symbols amongst the collages?
4) Students comment on another peers collage, stating one narrative
convention they themselves had missed.
5) Ensure student answers are centred around the following narrative
conventions and prompt students to ensure all elements are covered:
Setting: expansive landscapes, saloons, jail, isolated
homestead, ranches
Characters: protagonist = typically a loner character outside
of the law, sheriffs, cowboys
Themes: revenge, escape, good vs. bad
Plot: Conflicts with the land; ends in gunfight.
Key symbols: horses, tumbleweed, guns, Cowboy hat

1) Students return to their original PicCollage and create a border


around it to annotate the narrative conventions that they have used.
2) Using the class created list of narrative conventions that are typical of
a Western, students identify how many that they have included and
edit their PicCollages to add more images if theyve missed key
points.
3) Once students complete they upload new annotated and edited
collages to Class Verso.

Transition: (What needs to happen prior to the next lesson?)

1) Remind class that next lesson theyll be using their PicCollages, so


students who havent finished must finalise and upload to Verso prior
to next lesson.
2) Teacher reviews students submissions taking note of aspects that
need revision before beginning next lessons activity. Choose an
exemplar to begin the next lessons review.
3) Follow up with students who have excelled and those that require
more work in the next lesson.

Objective 1: this objective is met if students have successfully completed and


annotated their PicCollage to include all key narrative conventions of a
Western film.
