ENG3U FINAL EVALUATION 2017: SATIRICAL NEWSCAST OR

SPEECH

For this summative, you must choose ONE of the options listed below which involves
choosing a topic reflected in a piece of work this semester, researching the topic
further, and presenting your opinion. Your presentation style will take the form of a
satirical newscast and should last at least 2 minutes (with a max. of only 30
seconds of video clips included) OR the form of a formal persuasive speech which
should be at least 5 minutes.

OPTION ONE:

Step One: Choose a well-written/educated essay or a speech. Be sure to choose

a topic that interests or upsets you. It usually works best if you disagree.

Step Two: Read the essay and identify (record) the main arguments the author
explores in the given paper.

Step Three: Agree or disagree with the topic and then look for ways to either
refute what the author has said, or in some cases, support what the author has said
by adding in your own opinion and examples. (You are allowed to sit on the fence,
but should be critical about some aspects of the article). You must do research
at this point to integrate into your writing (cite facts, data, references to
authority, etc.).

Step Four: Create a Satirical Newscast that is at least 2 minutes in length. Be sure
to include rhetorical devices, satirical devices, and methods of development, such
as: rhetorical question, figurative language (simile, metaphor), irony, reference to
authority, facts, stats, hyperbole, incongruity, etc. (refer to all notes about these
devices).

Step Five: Submit a copy of the essay or speech your newscast is based on as well
as a transcript of your newscast

Step Six: Submit a list of devices used and explain how they enhanced your
speech. (This may be done in chart form downloaded from our website)

Step Seven: Include a Works Cited page which includes at least 3 reputable
sources.

Your Newscast must do the following:

Identify the thesis and main arguments of the essay provided.

Appropriately respond to the thesis using information from your own

experience and knowledge. Secondary research must be used to support your
arguments (a minimum of 3 valid sources are required with a proper
works cited page). This means that you must consult other articles,
websites, videos, newscasts to find information to support your newscast.

Communicate with clarity, using appropriate language and diction.

Remember the best satires are delivered with clarity and precision.
Practice ahead of time: timing (exaggerated pauses, etc.), pronunciation,
expression in voice and face, memorizing or at least setting up your
teleprompter to make it look like youre naturally talking to the camera.

OPTION TWO

Step One: Choose a topic from The Kite Runner such as feminism, gender roles,
violence, ambition, immigration, refugees, racism, The Taliban, etc.

Step Two: Explore how the author/text portrays the issue with specific quotes (4-
5). This research should be part of your rough work and there should be references
to them later in the newscast.

Step Three: Research current aspects of the same topic and take an opinion on
this issue. You must include a minimum of 3 researched sources.

Step Four: Following the style of John Oliver or John Stewart, create a short
newscast that explores the topic and your opinion on it. You may use photos and
video clips to convey your argument. Not only should you include rhetorical devices
and methods of development, but you should also include satirical devices (refer to
notes about all of these).

Step Five: Submit a transcript of your newscast.

Step Six: Submit a list of devices used and explain how they enhanced your
speech. (This may be done in chart form downloaded from our website).

Step Seven: Include a Works Cited page which includes at least 3 reputable
sources.

OPTION THREE

Step One: Choose a topic from The Kite Runner such as feminism, gender roles,
violence, ambition, immigration, refugees, racism, The Taliban, etc.. You may choose a
topic not on the list; however, it must be approved by the teacher.

Step Two: Prepare a speech which includes at least 4 different rhetorical

devices that you have studied in class and 3 methods of development. Your
speech must also employ Aristotles modes of persuasion: ethos
(credibility/trust), pathos (emotions/values), logos (logic/reason/proof). Present a 5-7
minute persuasive speech to the class on your chosen topic (or record in advance).

Step Three: A hard copy of your speech must be submitted. As well as a chart
identifying and explaining your use of rhetorical devices, methods of development and
methods of persuasion.

Step Four: Submit a list of devices used and explain how they enhanced your
speech. (This may be done in chart form downloaded from our website)

Step Five: Include a Works Cited page which includes at least 3 reputable sources.

Keep in Mind:
Be sure to carefully select diction that will best serve your purpose of swaying
your audience. This is a formal assignment; hence, your diction should
also be formal.

Speeches must be presented to the class on a selected date. An effective

speaker does not read his/her speech. Your speech is to be memorized or to
be presented using cue cards. Eye contact, enunciation, and appropriate
stage presentation will be evaluated in addition to your speech.
